I do a lot of body weight exercises like squats, push-ups, crunches, bridges, planks, leg raises, etc. I use instagram to get a lot of my workout ideas but nerdfitness also has a lot of great ideas.0

This article has a link to the ACSM publication which explains it in much more detail.

i added full body cardio of rowing machine and elliptical to my routines.
for strength, trainer devised a 4day starter cycle for me,working different muscle groups daily.
if you use a gym, start by asking there fore specific goal advice.

be cautious of gym trainers' advice. it can be questionable. if you're really interested in "full body" strength, a 3x5 or 5x5 program would be the way to go.
+1 for the c2 rower advice. awesome!0 -

I would recommend looking into the Stronglifts 5x5 program, or Starting Strength, or possibly the Ice Cream Fitness program. All are oriented toward beginners, all feature many of the same lifts, and are oriented towards strength training. I'm currently at week 9 of the Stronglifts 5x5 and find it works with my schedule (only takes about 50-55 minutes per workout), provides fantastic gains, and there is a point where you move on to something else though you can continue with Stronglifts for quite some time. It's usually followed by Madcow (similar to the Texas method), then with the Advanced SL 5x5. If you decide on following one of these programs, I suggest you follow the program exactly as laid out. Unless you are not a beginner.0
