Carob is revolting. I was allergic to chocolate as a kid and I'll never forget the feeling of dismay and betrayal when my mom told me at Easter she had found special chocolate I could eat and I took my first bite...

    ...scarred for life.

ETA: they have about the same amount of carbs, too.

I agree. It might look a bit like chocolate but it certainly doesn't taste anything like it. I'd rather go without than eat it.

My opinion on carob - just run away, run fast, run far.

If I am going to bake something that calls for chocolate chips, I'm damn well going to use real chocolate chips. My preference is for a high quality chocolate, I find I can use less because the flavor is far more intense than the cheap kind.

My motto is that life is too short to put up with three things: cheap chocolate, bad wine and ugly underwear.

Carob nibs are much less processed than chocolate chips. There is no sugar added, making them very bitter. They are good to add to oatmeal or top of a smoothie for texture. I'm not sure I would add them to a cookie or bread recipe though. If baking, I would go with a good dark chocolate that you can use less of.
