In your exeperience......

do I have to gain weight because I just quit smoking?? I had to quit smoking because of medical reasons but I'm so scared of gaining weight and especially because I am only 4lbs away from my goal weight of 105 lbs. I've worked hard and I don't want to go backwards!

You don't *have* to gain weight. Some people find their appetite increases when they quit, others may just need another 'habit' to keep their fingers and mouths occupied and end up over eating. But if you continue tracking food and sticking to your calorie goal there is no reason why you cannot keep losing.

I'm gonna order me a valdarkahaan love spell. Maybe two. ;)

No, you don't have to gain weight. People gain because they're like, "What the hell do I do?!?!" It's so hard to quit!

I tired sucking on French fires, but I ate them. Then tired sucking air through Twizzlers, but then I ate those damn things, too. I realized food wouldn't help and tried straws. Unhelpful. I tried toothpicks because I saw guys doing it. No help at all.

Gum. Gum became my thing. I quit eleven year and 7 days ago and I'm still chewing it, lol.

I cleaned a LOT that first week. I went to the movies like every day, just kill time in a place where I was used to doing without the cigarettes. I visited friends who didn't smoke. That's all I remember other than how hard it was. So very hard.

Hang in there! It gets easier!!

Quitting smoking doesn't make you gain weight. Eating everything in site because you quit smoking makes you gain weight. If you quit, and still eat within your allowance you will not gain weight because of a lack of cigarettes. Try using patches or nicorette gum to keep the craving at bay, worked for me, and means you don't substitute with food.

Well I am using the patch and e-vapor pen, so far today I have not been more hungry so maybe it will be ok, thanks!

Hi! Good luck with the quitting smoking. It's hard but so worth it! I joined MFP when i quit smoking 18 months ago as I too was worried about gaining weight! MFP really helped me to stay focussed with my weight loss and I now find I exercise a whole lot better now ! When you start to feel the non smoking results you'll feel better! My skin looks so much fresher. I have changed jobs since and people are amazed when I tell them I was an over-weight smoker not long ago! I counted my giving up days off and rewarded myself as milestones passed! All that extra money in my pocket! I also kept a bit of a no smoking log in the note section of my food diary. Hope it goes well!

You're better off with a few extra pounds than smoking any day. That's first of all.

Secondly, people who gain weight after quitting smoking do so because they substitute one vice for another: food for cigarettes.
Put your energy into fitness and focusing on enjoying healthy eating instead of cigarettes, and you'll be fine.

Recent research suggests giving up smoking can make significant changes to your gut bacteria and that this is in particular is responsible for the tendency to put on a bit of weight afterwards. Look into it. Trying to replenish the balance of gut bacteria after quitting might help.

They say your body instantly starts to repair smoking damage an hour after you guit i read! Those are some really good ideas, I will have to use some of them. I especially like the one about rewarding yourself, I think I will save all the money i am saving for something special, thanks! :)

hmm, gut bacteria, well i drink Keefier which is Probiotic yogurt smoothies because it put the good bacteria back in my stomach from being on to many antibiotics, which made me have stomach problems, so maybe that will help me because I drink Keefir interesting.....

I'm doing the same thing...patch and e-cig. I have not smoked for 36 days. I have lost 10 lbs. It's tough, but you can do it. I also lift weights at the gym and do a little cardio. Good luck to you!!
