Hia guys!
Okay so I need some help! On the weekend it has always been tradition that we have a takeaway on Saturday night, but now, as I'm doing quite well and am motivated I need ideas for an alternative.
So I was wondering whether anyone has any suggestions for homemade "takeaway" style meals for a Saturday night?
I'm doing calorie counting, so low cal would be good!
Thanks so much in advance!

Hello! Not sure what kinds of takeaway are your favourites, but this is what my partner makes for me when I'm trying to avoid fish and chips@

Fish & chips for under 400 cals? Saturday dealt with.0 -
What about an Indian?
Boil the chicken, use a tomato based sauce, and skip the rice.0 -
You can do Indian or Chinese with Cauliflower rice. It's super low cal and very filling0

I love 'The Hairy Dieters' books. They have a whole section dedicated to 'Fakeaways!'.
The books are about £10 - would highly recommend having a look at them.
You may be able to find some of their fakeaway recipes online for free!0 -
Curries from scratch are always good - stick to tomato-based as opposed to coconut/cream-based ones.
You can buy okra in many UK supermarkets, thought they are generally a bit cheaper (and you can but different quantities) in the oriental and ethnic food markets that are in many of the UK cities. Adding these to any tomato-based curry pumps up the fibre and the vitamin intake and as long as you don't overcook them, they are lovely!
You can also add (bell) peppers as well as lots of onion to keep the flavour and health benefits up and the calories down.
If you do prefer the saucier curries, you can take a portion of the sauce into a blender and puree it down then add it back, that way it seems creamier but there's not the extra fat and calories of actual cream. Reduced fat creme fraiche is a great alternative to cream in cooking if you really must have a pasanda/korma-style curry.
I also make my own chapatis instead of having rice, I love chapatis and being wholewheat flour there's a slower release of energy than naan bread (which also takes longer to make)
Good luck and let us know what you end up cooking0 -
Hia! Thank you so much!
I've got the hairy dieters book at home actually - just remembered!
I LOVE Chinese food so I might have a look at them!
I'm a tad excited now! ha!0 -
Just find a recipe for your favorite meal and make it. I did that with sesame chicken. Served it over peppers and white rice.0

I like to make chicken parmigiana just with whole grilled chicken breast, bit of tinned chopped tomatoes, and a little grated cheese on top, with oven baked chips & steamed veg.
Or hamburgers with turkey burgers instead of beef, wholemeal roll and salad. You could try making home made pizza's as well, sometimes we do those with pita bread as the bases...add whatever ingredients you like and you could put less cheese on yours, but the family could make their own so they can have the choice or whatever they like...for example my family put loads of salami etc.
Other than that, I usually try to make sure I work out on days I know I will get take away. Even just an hour walk in the morning can burn about 500 calories and reduce the stress about eating takeaway0 -
Stir fry is my 'takeaway' meal of choice. Lots of veggies, protein of some kind and wholewheat noodles, with garlic, chilli, ginger etc and some soy sauce/sweet chilli sauce. YUM. Who needs a greasy, fatty, chinese takeaway?!0

Hairy Dieters for me all the way. Love their Chicken Jalfrezi.0

I LOVE Chinese takeaway ... and this is my favorite recipe to make at home. I think its WAY better than any Chicken and Broccoli I've got at a restaurant.
Chicken and Broccoli
Ingredients:
4 small/medium chicken breast
Potato or corn starch
4 crowns broccoli
Olive oil
2 Tbsp diced garlic
4-5 Tbsp oyster sauce
Salt and pepper to taste
Crushed red pepper (optional)
Sesame seeds (optional)
Cut chicken into slices of regular about bite-size pieces, pat dry, coat with starch, add a little pepper, and set aside. Cut broccoli into bite-size florets. Add a generous amount of olive oil to a pan or wok and heat to med/high heat. Add the broccoli and stir fry only until broccoli turns bright green and has nice crunch. Remove and set aside. Add more oil and add the chicken and garlic. Stir fry until almost thoroughly cooked then turn down heat, add oyster sauce to coat the chicken at the last minute, and add in the cooked broccoli. Garnish with sesame seeds and crushed red pepper if desired. Serve over rice.0
