fantasy journey with cross trainer/eliptical/treadmill

I was watching an episode of Modern Family (season 5 episode 10) where the character Phil uses an eliptical to "walk to Canada" by tracking his miles/km. I was wondering if anyone else had done something similar as a motivator to excersize more.
If you have how did you do it? Are there any phone apps/websites that help to track it? I looked but I couldn't find any, I was also unsure of what exactly to google to get what I was looking for.

They used to have a map on the wall where I used to work where they had circles marked with miles where you could see how far you would have gone if you were tracking miles walked. That was when I worked at a facility with a large indoor manufacturing floor where people walked laps around the isles. They also had it measured how far the laps were.
As for tracking distance, you could use something like "Map My Fitness" to track it. It can use a GPS to track walks, bike rides, etc. plus if you record treadmill/elliptical/etc. it gives you the capability of recording distance as well as time and calories. I use it for bike rides, canoeing, hiking, etc. but I don't track my indoor cardio with it.
Plus, MapMyFitness syncs to MFP.0 -
I saw that episode as well and would love to do that journey. My elliptical doesn't have a distance counter nor a step counter on the control pane so I am unable to it simply. I was going to base on average speed (which mine does display) and how long each session was. I would download a map from Google and (like Phil) draw my gains in after each session. Most of the apps I've looked at want a moving GPS for getting distance and that is something an elliptical doesn't have.
It's easier to do on a treadmill... mine does show distance and speed0 -
I have some friends with fantasies with ellipticals, but I'm pretty sure they aren't mileage-based ones...0

So perhaps there's a market for an app that does what Phil did in that episode, something where you just input the distance you've done and the app works out how much closer you are to your fantasy destination. Wish I knew how to create apps lol.
I was hoping I wouldn't have to work it all out myself haha.0 -
Haha... My maths sucks ha.
I have seen an elliptical (which costs about £3000!!) that downloads Google street view onto a monitor in the console and then travels along the route as you go. How cool would that be0 -
Ah that would be awesome to have. I'm suprised an app with this kind of idea doesn't already exist as it's a pretty good way to get motivated to excersize more0

You might be able to adapt an app like this (http://apps.microsoft.com/windows/en-us/app/volg-my-mileage/98ba849a-adc9-42e8-a5de-552a2039bdd6) for walking/running/elliptical usage.
My company did a walking competition and we entered our daily mileage. It added it up and said 'You've walk from Florida to Texas" or something like that.0 -
Those kind of apps don't seem to be very good for tracking walking. Thanks though!0

Hence why I said ADAPT.0 -
I am currently walking to the Statue of Liberty. I actually got this idea from a friend of mine
I went on Google maps and mapped the distance from my front door to the monument.
I do most of my working out on a treadmill so I track my mileage monthly and subtract it from my total.
I have a white board in my workout room at home and I hung a picture of the monument on it so I can always see what I'm working towards. Since August 1, I've walked 68 of 727 miles.
When I do work out on my elliptical, it doesn't have a distance tracker so I don't get to track mileage for that workout.
Good luck! :flowerforyou:0 -
I know, that's what I meant I can't find one I can adapt because they all seem to use gps or odometer readings.0

Guess I'll have to do that as well Mexicanbigfoot!
Good luck on your journey0
