    An update on the Larro Ranchero garden is in order. The Chili peppers are still cranking right along.

    The latest pea patch is ready to pick. I thought I had planted purple hulls, but they look like Brown Crowders to me. Oh well, peas are peas I guess. I have just got spoiled with the color assisted picking guide.

    Right now this one looks like a Crimson Sweet. Will have to wait and see how it grows, round or long.

    It's fall here in Pennsplvania' s Appalachia. Beautiful colors appearing on leaves, geese passing through, asters and soon chestnut season. Last year we netted 60# of chestnut meat after shelling. I just ground a gallon of chestnut flour with last year's leftovers about 20 #s.

    What a blessing these trees are. I planted them 40 years ago. They were the first trees I ever planted. This year we have lots of free ranging chickens so it will be interesting to see if we have to compete with our birds for the nuts. Let the games begin.

    I have one big chestnut tree over at our old house, as well as some citrus, fig, peach and pear trees. My problem is I stay so busy I forget to get over there to pick them when the fruit is ripe. I did get a few figs this year, though.

    Squirrels used to be my biggest competition but the chickens don't like them and hopefully will be our watchbirds when nut drop begins.

    My son came up with a way to peel them much less dangerous than knives which slip. We use a good quality pair of pruners, cut them in half ... boil them up till shell and skin fall off but nut is slightly firm. Dump the whole thing on baking sheet to dry ... package in 2 cup =# lots.

    It's about a 2 week harvest and we've found processing immediately yields the most worm free nuts.

    So wish I had figs and citrus .... but do love chestnuts.

    Thanks for the tip about preparing the chestnuts. I don't know if there are any left at the old house. Without cats to keep the squirrels at bay, they are most likely all gone by now.

    I picked a few peppers yesterday. I also found three cucumbers in the tall grass. I had thought they were all gone. Clipped three melons as well. They were the volunteers. The ones I planted are not going to have enough time to ripen.

    Your produce is lovely! We're definitely into fall here too so I've been working on clearing my garden out while keeping my fingers crossed we'll have enough warm days to finish ripening the last of my tomatoes and bell peppers.

    Back in the day I grew a little dental floss too. But I preferred the pine woods as a gardening site.

    The volunteer melon turned out to be a yellow meat. Which is kind of weird since there hasn't been any yellow meat melons in the garden since last summer. It could have used a few more days to ripen, but the vines were dying.

    I clipped a few of the volunteer melons this week. The long one turned out to be a yellow meat. The crazy thing is there hasn't been any yellow meat in the garden since last summer.

    I've got an early start on this year's garden. The first tomato sprouts are coming up.
