Any "Food Phobias" Out There?

I have had food phobias for the majority of my life, of various types. My couple I am willing to mention so far are: 1) I do not eat meat with bones, period. 2) I do not allow food to touch my lips, so if I am eating ice cream with a spoon I flip the spoon over and pull the ice cream off with my tongue. 3) I do not touch popcorn with my hands, if I am at home I eat it with a spoon, if I am in a theater I ask them for a water glass to pour the popcorn in or when I was working I would pinch the individual popcorn kernels with my acrylic nails.

Any one else???

  • I have a habit of digging through all of my food like an archaeologist when it's food I haven't prepared (restaurants, parties, potlucks, etc).

I have a thing about hair. Stray hairs, loose hairs, in food.

If I see a hair, feel a hair, realize one is in a bite of food currently in my mouth, I vomit violently.

I KNOW this sounds crazy, it is a mental thing, I KNOW this, but honestly, I do get sick when hair is in food.

I don't like eating food homemade by other people. I get thoughts of children sneezing on ingredients, pets sampling when no one's looking, things being dropped and used, dirty hands doing the cooking......on and on and on. Ick.

I am terrified by mozzarella cheese since mama abandoned me at a Pizza Hut as a child.
  • I will not eat at buffets. I will send back drinks that the person put my straw in the glass or they touched with their fingers around where the mouths go. I send back silverware with spots/food/etc on it. If I see grissel/pieces of bone or taste it in my meat, I stop eating completely. I am turned off of eating at that time. I don't like eating meat off bones. I will eat meat, it just can't be on a bone. If someone gets pissy with me at a food place, I will leave because I don't want them to spit in my food. I have that paranoia/phobia they will, because I've seen documentaries about them doing that to disgruntled customers.

Not exactly a phobia, but I eat every thing in a meal separately. I mean this like how most people would put a little bit of everything (different vegetables/meat etc) on a fork and eat it, I will eat each component of the meal individually. As a kid I even took apart my sandwiches and would eat the bread/lettuce/ham (for example) individually. I also can't have sauces mixing, so if we ever had cauliflower cheese with a roast dinner which had gravy, it had to be on a separate plate.

Even now I'm vegan, if I make a spaghetti bolognese, I eat the sauce/veg big first, then the spaghetti, same with curry and rice, and so on and so forth. I've always been told it is weird :/

I have a friend who doesn't like the foods on his plate to touch. And no meals like stew and soups and such where foods are mixed together. I never thought of it as a phobia... just his thing.

A majority of my dishes come from me..... If I leave a glass of water unattended I will not drink out of it, I will toss it on the plants and wash it or rinse it out well. My kids love to steal my cups so I can never be certain.

I have to sniff the type of dinner rolls that come frozen, mostly used for Thanksgiving and xmas. Some of them have this smell that makes me know it is the kind that will make me want to yarf.

I assume you've never worked in the restaurant industry.

I didn't until yesterday when my darling husband presented me with THIS fresh from the sheep... the SMELL, OMG the SMELL! Yeah, I'm pretty much boycotting anything that has made with anything that came out of this bowl.

Eid al-Adha... it is to sheep in the Muslim world.. what Thanksgiving is to turkeys in the USA.

I don't think its a phobia.. but I cant stand when my food falls apart! Like if im eating a burger and the bread tears or something... It just drives me nuts. And I have to eat everything from one direction to the other. I don't just dig in wherever. I also cant stand when my one food touches another. They HAVE to be separate.
  • I don't share my spoon, fork, or straw with anyone and forget about taking a bite off of my sandwich. I also don't let my food touch and eat it one at a time but I think that is more because of my culture.
  • Vinegar.
Anything that smells faintly of vinegar.
Anything that contains amounts of vinegar that I can detect, even slightly.

Don't know why, but I've always been like this. Even the smell of it makes me gag. The other week someone had chips with vinegar at work and I had to leave the room and vomit. It's kind of embarrassing.

I suffer from Selective Eating Disorder (SED) which is also known as Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) now. I've had it since I was a baby and was taken off of bottle feeds. I have MASSIVE food phobias. I am scared to death of any nuts or nut butters, seafood, and fish. If people are with me and eating those then I can't eat or drink. I also do not eat any vegetables or fruits. I have a very small list of foods I will eat and I eat the exact same things every single day of my life. I can't say it's fun.

Sushi. Friends have tried to get me to give it a chance on numerous occasions. I know that it's actually cooked. It's sashimi that's raw. I still gag just putting the stuff in my mouth. The one time I did swallow a small piece, I ended up choking and hacking it back up. My entire nervous system is just hardwired to say "Nope!" to that stuff!

Strawberries. I can't eat anything that's been in contact with them, or been on a plate with them.

If I order a glass of champagne and it comes with a strawberry on the side, I need a new drink. Can't have it just taken off, or the wine poured into a new glass, I need an actual whole fresh drink.

Oh I cannot do raw tuna, and I'm a huge foodie! I don't know why because I like cooked tuna! Ahi is not my friend.

I cannot drink water that isn't from the kitchen tap. I KNOW that it is the same water that comes from the taps upstairs in the bathroom but I would rather run the risk of waking everyone up by traipsing downstairs to get a fresh glass of water from the kitchen in the middle of the night when I am in England (we live in a flat in Munich) since I cannot bear drinking it from the bathroom.
    First-world problems, I know...

My sister is like this and shes 32. I didn't even realise this until she mentioned it while lunching at hers.

Its just recently that I will eat meat with a bone in it. Wouldnt eat ribs or wings.
Wont eat anything raw like fish and especially oysters. They look like deformed vaginas. Ewww...

I never thought anybody else felt this way about tapioca.

It's not that I don't like it but it really does just freak me out, hard to explain.

I definitely do not do mixed textures like tapioca or rice pudding, blech

I'm so glad to see there are others out there. Regular people just don't get it. I can't have my food touching and I can't eat any meat that isn't VERY well done. Its not an issue of picky I will seriously be sick.

Yep. absolutely no foods touching on my plate. And nothing with gravy, stew included. Will eat broth soups, and Cream of Mushroom soup but that's the closest to gravy I get.
