interesting article about walmart

Replies

  • Its interesting considering Walmart just opened a brand new store near my house that has an icecream bar as soon as you walk in the door.
  • I think with stores like Whole Foods, Sunflower and Sprouts - Walmart doesn't want to be left behind. My husband used to work for Walmart and now works for Sunflower. The Walmart brass were in Sunflower back in Oct, walking around and taking notes. Also their sales are down so they are looking at innovative ways to get people back in!

I live in a place that's not full of great produce, and I moved here from a place that IS full of great produce. With the right eye, I eat nothing but WalMart food. I have a low grocery bill, a smaller waistline, and high quality food. Sure not everything there is amazing, and sometimes I can't get X produce because it's not available (when it would be elsewhere) but my produce section is huge, the food is fresh, and I am satisfied.

Thanks for sharing the article; I'd heard about ocmpanies talking about doing this so it's great to see in print that Walmart is one of them. It's refreshing to see that companies are starting to standup and start fixing a problem they helped cultivate.

I heard about this last week on GMA. I also read an article via Michelle Obama. I think its absolutely great! I steer away from fresh fruits and vegies because Im on a tight budget and I also buy most Great Value products. Now I can actually afford those oranges! LOL!

I am happy to see that a large corporation such as Walmart is trying to help, but I do not believe it will work out for many. It isn't that Walmart isn't doing enough, its really the lack of education many people have when eating (this is in my opinion).

I also think that it is going to be hard for the companies that just sell their products through Walmart and that Walmart has no say over. Walmart is still a business and will still want to make money. If a chip company wants to sell their great tasting but also awful for you chip, then Walmart will. Its just the beast of the business, especially when thinking in terms of a larger scale vs privately owned.

Again it comes down to eating healthy and learning how to eat (which is something I, like many, had to relearn). If you go to the grocery store (Walmart or not), just watch what kinds of foods people typically pick up. Even when picking up produce, some may eat too many fruits and not enough veggies or something like that.

So I commend Walmart for taking this initiative, but a lot more has to be done than just one corporation changing their products. People need to be reeducated on how much they eat and what they eat.

I heard about it on GMA as well. I think it's great! Hopefully, if more people shop Walmart and buy healthier options, prices will be affordable.

I think it is fabulous! I hate shopping at Walmart, but when you are on a tight budget, you have to make sacrifices. That being said, I do almost all of my shopping there and it will be great to have lower sodium, lower sugar choices!!

I think it's great - but I am worried about it backfiring. A lot of the nutritionally uneducated folks will just take this as a green light to eat as much as they want of the foods, just because they're slightly healthier than before..

It's a step in the right direction. It's also where I get most of my produce during the winter. Summer = farmers markets and my own garden. I go to one 15 minutes from my house one way as opposed to 10 minutes the other way because they have fresher produce and a cleaner store.
