I am currently taking the HCG drops and have lost 2 pounds since Thursday when I started. I think I would have lost more if I didn't have wine this weekend, but what I am wondering is if there are any others out there who are on this diet?
I would love to hear some success stories and even welcome the unsuccessful stories as well. Just wondering what everyone's thoughts are on this diet.

Did HCG... lost weight... gained it back. Not worth the $ or time in my opinion. Hope your success is better than what I had.

I have been on here and just have been devoting the time and effort and work and have had great success. I think there is no such thing as a fat "cure" other than eating right and exercising.

    Best of luck to you!

I've heard a lot about it and seen lots of ads around town for it, but don't seem to have heard of too many of my girlfriends doing it? After failing the fad diet yoyo for years and throwing lots of money at it, I decided I jjust had to do it the right way... NATURALLY... of course, my opinion, but I'm interested to hear more about this one and see the long term results... Seems like it promises fast drops, but in my experience, when you lose weight fast, you're not giving your body enough time to adapt to these changes and your brain enough time to reprogram itself into healthy habits...

I'm curious...I've never heard of this. Is this the same HCG that is detected by a pregnancy test?

    wikipedia, for your info.

Weight loss A controversial usage of hCG is as an adjunct to the British endocrinologist A.T.W. Simeons' ultra-low-calorie weight-loss diet[13] (less than 500 calories).[14] Simeons, while studying pregnant women in India on a calorie-deficient diet, and “fat boys” with pituitary problems (Frölich's syndrome) treated with low-dose hCG, claimed that both lost fat rather than lean (muscle) tissue. He reasoned that hCG must be programming the hypothalamus to do this in the former cases in order to protect the developing fetus by promoting mobilization and consumption of abnormal, excessive adipose deposits. Simeons, practicing at Salvator Mundi International Hospital in Rome, Italy, recommended low-dose daily hCG injections (125 IU) in combination with a customized ultra-low-calorie (500 cal/day, high-protein, low-carbohydrate/fat) diet loss of adipose tissue without loss of lean tissue. After Simeons’ death, the diet started to spread to specialized centers and via popularization by individuals, such as the controversial author Kevin Trudeau, famous for promotion of alternative therapies and treatments.

The controversy proceeds from warnings by the Journal of the American Medical Association[15] and the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition[16] that hCG is neither safe,[15] nor effective as a weight-loss aid.[17]

A meta analysis found that studies supporting hCG for weight loss were of poor methodological quality and concluded that "there is no scientific evidence that HCG is effective in the treatment of obesity; it does not bring about weight-loss or fat-redistribution, nor does it reduce hunger or induce a feeling of well-being".[18]

[edit] Homeopathic hCG for weight control Controversy about and shortages[19] of injected hCG for weight loss have led to substantial internet promotion of "homeopathic hCG" for weight control. The ingredients in these products are often obscure, but if prepared from true hCG via homeopathic dilution, they contain either no hCG at all or only trace amounts. Proponents of homeopathic HCG claim the solution bears the "energetic imprint" of HCG. There is no scientific evidence that this "energetic imprint" exists or that homeopathic hCG has any effect. According to Dr Dennis Clark at Diets In Review, "Homeopathic HCG does not fit the classical criteria for a homeopathic treatment. Published results are all based on testimonials. No scientific research has been published on homeopathic HCG in any of the homeopathic or mainstream medical research journals."[20]
On January 24, 2011 the FDA deemed this drug fraudulent and ineffective for weight loss. It is also not protected as a homeopathic drug and has been deemed an illegal substance. http://www.theepochtimes.com/n2/content/view/49921/

I could understand how hard it would be to maintain a low calorie diet like this for a lifetime. I do fear that I will gain it all back but my plan is to gradually amp up the little exercise that I like and hope for the best. Thanks for your input.

It is definitely a discipline to eat the low calories that they require. I like the no exercise aspect although I know that, that is not healthy as a lifestyle. I am finding it hard, but I feel like I spent so much money on the drops that if I cheated I would only be cheating myself. I honestly don't notice being any less hungry than if I weren't taking them, and I am starting to wonder whether it really is just water.
I have lost 5lbs. and I just started last Wed. If this keeps up then I will recommend it, but only time will tell. Thanks for your comments.

Yes supposedly it is the hormone that your body produces when pregnant that feeds off your fat rather than every meal you eat. It makes sense, the science behind but whether you can get your hands on the "real deal" outside of a prescription is still questionable to me.

    Thanks for the info
  • I'm on it and I've lost 17 pounds in 14 days. I have a week left of phase 2.

I also have family that has done it and they've all kept the weight off.

That being said: It probably not for everyone, I've modified it to work for me... Yet, I have to tell you, I'm SO glad I did it. (I cheated tonight, but, I don't feel like its a step backwards or anything) I think the best thing for me was the reality check on how much I was eating. If you're an over eater, this diet will kick your *kitten* for the first week.

Let me know if you have any questions.

I have lost 38 pounds in 2 rounds on HCG injections. Have kept the weight off since October of last year, so almost 5 months so far.

I am back on the Primal plan and losing again.

The key to keeping the weight off is to adhere to all the phases to a T, especially Phase 3, the no sugar, no starch phase. This is where the Hypothalamus resets to the new set point.

In Phase 4, you have to slowly re-introduce the sugars and starches back into your plan.

Thank you so much for sharing your success story Safetypins. I feel the same way that it has helped me to realize how much I have been eating and how in my whole life I have NEVER been this disciplined in WHAT I eat!
I have lost 5lbs already and we shall see, one week will be Wednesday.

Good luck to those of you on the hCG diet!!! I didn't personally feel that I could commit to the eating plan involved otherwise I would have gone that route myself. I actually work for a homeopathic lab and we do quite a LOT of hCG every week. And the enormous quantities made and sold every week tells me that it's working for a lot of people. Ironically though hCG has given me the motivation to actually do something about my own weight. Because of the huge increase in business over the last several months, we got very nice bonus checks this year. My family and I are using that bonus check to go on a vacation to the beach and I want to wear a bathing suit without being totally mortified in public... so I have a great motivator thanks to hCG even though I am not using it. :)

500 calories a day is NEVER healthy. Ever. Dangerously low number of calories for one to live off of. The HCG diet also encourages it's followers not to work out because the caloric deficit is already too low. There is no energy there for you to use. You'll burn muscle as your body hangs onto fat for storage as it will think it's starving. Of course you'll lose weight eating 500 calories a day, wacky hormones/chemicals or not. It really just depends on what kind of weight you want to lose and how you want to feel doing it. Lose muscle and feel sluggish or lose fat and feel fabulous. This diet is so entirely unhealthy! Sorry...that's my rant.

bgeer34- thank you for your comment. I am actually on the homeopathic HCG so it very well could have been your company that i bought it from. but it says something to me if you work there and haven't decided to use this. hmm.... well, and the diet is really tough to maintain so i don't blame you. it's weird because even though i bought it and i am trying to do it just like it says, i am still a skeptic. losing 5lbs since last thursday is the amount i would expect to lose anyway from water weight, the real deal will happen after this first week of water weight. i wonder are you allowed to answer questions about your work?

kristie874- thank you for your input, i really appreciate all the info out there. it is so interesting to me because i thought all of those things too before going on the diet , i thought 500 calories a day would make anyone lose weight, and whether it is taken from muscle, or fat is the real science behind it all.
i don't notice that i am tired and i have a pretty active life. mom of 4 and a preschool teacher. but i have had times of real hunger pains but they say it's because i am not using enough drops. so i am upping the drops today to see if that helps.
congrats to you btw for losing so much weight, that is awesome!
  • I broke down and went to a local weight loss clinic and purchased the HCG injections. It is not cheap at all! I just started this past Thursday so today is day 5. I gained 3 lbs after the first 2 days which were the "loading" days. As of today I have lost a total of 5.5 lbs (including those 3 lbs I gained). It has only been 3 days so far on the actual 500 calories a day and it is not easy!! I slipped and ate a couple of oreos last night but even when I did that I think it was more of a psychological thing. I dunno...

We will see how long this lasts! The injections aren't that bad, you really hardly feel it....after I cheated last night however, I really began to doubt whether I should continue (because of the injections/diet itself) but I've been on track all day today. I'm going to try my hardest to finish this through although if it doesn't start to get even a little better, I won't be doing this diet again.

Losing weight was easy on it, the problem I faced was putting life and social events on hold, then coming off the HCG diet afterwards. You'll definitely lose weight if you follow it, but most people I know personally, gained quite a bit more weight back afterwards.

angiephx- you do the injections yourself? i thought you could only get injections by prescription only. yes, i am right where you are as far as starting about the same time and the same amount of weight loss. i feel the same way about if i don't start to feel less hunger pains i wonder how i can keep going.
i thought the whole thing about these drops was that is was supposed to help with hunger pains. well, wednesday will be a week for me and i am only doing 15 days at first just to see if it works.
after those two weeks then i will revaluate where i am at and how i feel on this diet.
    thanks for your input.

mark996- yes putting life on hold is always the hard part of any diet. i know this wont' be something diet wise that i will be able to make a lifestyle habit, but it is helping to be more aware and keep my portions low.
    thanks for your comments.
  • Yes I do the injections myself and I do have a prescription. The clinic premixed the hcg and I just pull out 125 units everyday myself. I'm an LPN and I know how to give injections but they went through explaining everything anyway, lol, and then they made me give myself my first injection to make sure I was capable of it.
About 4 months ago I googled in my area for places that had hcg and there were none... now there's like 6 places in town offering it.

I got my prescription from my Naturopathic Doctor and the compounding pharmacy in St Louis.
  • Oh wow, you are hardcore :) Well, I hope it works for you and really well too since you are having double the pain. But you know what they say, "No pain, No gain!"
  • Well I have been on this thing for over a week now and I have lost 10lbs. Truly think that most of that is just water weight and that this week ahead will be the real deal as to whether it's going to do anything more for me than what I could just do for myself.
The weekends are a challenge for me for sure so I am hoping I don't cheat so that I really tell whether the HCG diet is working or not!

    MoNo Sco,
I have been Hcg for several weeks and lost 18lbs. I have several friends that have used it and have been successful. There is and hCG thread on MFP, and they are very helpful with questions and recipies. Look for it. I was very skeptical and researched for several months before I committed to it. Anyone who has not been on it would not understand that you can get by on the 500 calories with out being hungry or tired. The hCG is burning your abnormal fat stores and feeding your body from it. Maintenance from any weight loss plan is difficult, so easily we fall back to our bad eating habits. If you are determined to be successful, you will be. Good Luck.

Putting aside the fat loss while taking these drops, your body isn't getting the NUTRIENTS is needs on only 500 calories a day. Getting your nutrients is just as important to weight loss as creating a calorie deficit.
  • Thank you for the encouragement. I will go look for the thread of HCG-ers now!
