Give me your favorite things to do with ham

The man of the house tried to be frugal and I love him for it, but it's not exactly diet food either. He came home with a 9 pound half ham, cooked. Bought it on sale for less than $8 and I'm sure we can make it supper for a week or more for us and the two kids. I need ideas on different ways to prepare ham for supper each night, bonus points for low cal meals.

    Chop it up and add a bit to scrambled eggs.

    Ham salad?

    Uh... that's all I got. When you use all the meat, use the bone for a soup base.

    If you don't want to eat ham all week, split it up into meal-sized portions and wrap it in foil and stick it in the freezer. Then you can use it at your leisure.

    You could always have a bit with breakfast too, like ham & eggs.

    Ham & Eggs. Calories shouldn't be too bad, but the sodium.... ugh!

    Ham & Beans. Just enough ham to qualify it as H&B.

    Now I am hungry for ham. :ohwell:

    scalloped potatoes and ham

    ham and cheese samiches

    bean and ham soup..low cal

    baked beans with ham...low cal too

    chopped ham in string beans or spinach r collard greens or kale all good and ,,,low cal
  • my kids love hot ham and cheese sandwiches.
    scalloped potatoes
    split pea soup (not our favorite, but some like it)
    lightly browned in frying pan and put on salad

    Ooh I've never made ham salad I love chicken salad so i'll try that. Open face on one piece of toast would be good for lunches. Thanks!

    I'm totally rolling my eyes at him because of the sodium. Neither of us need it.

    I'm already looking forward to the ham bone soup.

    Yum! I love southern greens, and I usually do them with bacon, but this ham would be a good substitute, no?

    I don't like ham so I would say my favorite thing to do with it is either feed it to my brother and father or throw it in the garbage :laugh:.

    You can try to make a quiche with the ham and some vegetables.
  • I just made a batch of split pea soup with the ham bone from the holidays. Its very low cal and when you add carrots, potatoes, celery & onion you get your vegies but the sodoum is high.
  • I love to put ham with soup beans (great northern beans). The Randall brand has them already cooked in a big glass jar. I know not everyone likes beans, but the ham gives them such a nice flavor. Just tear up as many pieces of ham as you want to use. You could probably put them in a slow cooker too, and you'll get a nice filling meal or two. They're really good with corn bread, and the beans aren't expensive. Hope that helps :)

    when you have a ham bone left over with some meat on it, make split pea soup!!!! It's so fantastic on cold winter nights and super high in fibre and protein!! :D I can give you my recipe if you want it!!

    Dice it up small, and then boil some potatoes (not soft enough to mash). Drain the potatoes, leaving just a little bit of the liquid in the pot, and add the ham and some frozen green beans. Add some ground pepper and a little bit of dried minced onion, stir, and cover. Simmer for about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally until the green beans are heated through. It's yummy!
  • I make a mean grilled ham sandwich. Take two peieces of whole wheat bread (150 calories), 3 oz of lean ham deli meat (60 calories), and a slice of swiss cheese (60 calories). Dip the sandwich in egg yolk (70 calories) with garlic salt, pepper, and oregeno. Grill both sides until golden brown. It's a delicious lunch, and right in my calorie limit (340 calories).

    Oh, that reminds me! My husband makes Super Bowl ham sandwiches that are awesome for any kind of ham. If yours is thick sliced, cube it or kind of shred it, or if it's thin enough just leave it alone. Put it on your favorite kind of bun with a little Swiss (or cheddar) and some spicy brown mustard (or any kind of mustard you like -- I actually prefer hot honey mustard). Wrap in foil and bake in the oven at 325 for 30 minutes. Mmmmmmm... I'm so looking forward to Super Bowl Sunday. :)
  • 1. Get a couple boxes of Great Value or Zatarain's dirty rice and chop up ham pieces in that
    2. Scalloped potatoes and ham
    3. Chop up some ham pieces and stir fry with broccoli, bok choy, green onions, and Kikkoman soy sauce

    Just,as good as with Bacon. I've actually done the same with smoked turkey too.

    sounds good, I'll try this soon. I have everything needed in the house except the frozen green beans. But I do have some fresh asparaus and sub.

    I love Zataran's rice mixes! Wonder if this would work with the red beans and rice one I have in the cupboard already...hmm.

    Stir fry, love it, my kids could live on sticky rice alone, and I could withhold rice until I see more veggies go in their mouths

    Anyone have a lo cal scallop potato recipe?

    I could totally do this. I do all the baking at home, so on home made buns this would rock!

    I love me some split pea soup. i did it with left over ham bone from Easter last year in the crock pot. But no added veggies. I would love your recipe. Thanks!

    My first thought was "throw it out the window" :laugh: I hate ham!!! But last week my other half also thought it would be a great idea to buy a 20lb ham :noway: because it would feed everyone for a week. I made them Bean Soup, Scalloped Potatoes & Ham, Grilled Cheese and Ham sandwich, Ham & Broccoli cheese casserole and just ham on a plate with sides. More importantly when ever I cut ham up for supper, I gave all 4 dogs some to get rid of it fast:wink:

    I would put it in my slow cooker with some cabbage,carrots,potatoes and low sodium broth. Mmmmm: )

    You can reduce the sodium somewhat by soaking sliced ham in water for 5 to 10 minutes. You can even boil it if you wish. I then dry it off with clean towels (paper or linen). You can use it however you want after that.
  • This is my FAVORITE low fat/cat ham recipe.


    HAM CHOW MEIN (serves 4, 133 cal, 4 fat per serving)

    1/4 cup butter (I do 2 TBSP and it's plenty)
    1 cup chopped onions
    1 tsp salt
    1/8 tsp pepper
    1 cup chopped celery
    1 cup hot water (I usually forget to add the water and it doesn't make much of a difference)
    1 can bean sprouts (drained)
    1 cup diced ham
    2 tsp soy sauce
    1 tsp sugar
    1/3 cup cold water
    2 tbsp cornstarch
    Chow mein noodles (optional)

    Melt butter; add onions and saute for 5 minutes. Add salt, pepper, celery, and hot water. Cover and cook for 5 minutes. Add bean sprouts and ham. Mix thoroughly and heat to boiling point. Add flavoring and thickening ingredients (be sure to mix the cornstarch and cold water together BEFORE you add it to the pan). Stir lightly and cook for 5 minutes. Serve with chow mein noodles.
