When I look up a food sometimes it says 1 slice,1cup,2 Tabl and it's easy to figure how much you are eating. But, sometimes it says g and I'm not sure how much that is. Also, sometimes it says Generic homemade potato soup and it was only 40 calories so I Knew that wasn't right so I went with another potato soup that had more calories. So, sometimes I'm not sure if I'm adding the right amounts or not.

My sis-n-law told me to look for the number of confirmations. The more the better. There's also a tool that helps you figure out a recipe and break it down into servings.

If I am unsure, I choose the one with more calories because I would rather be safe than sorry. I do the opposite with exercise. If the machine and MFP have different values, I take the lower burn so that I know I what I burned at a minimum. I would rather err on the side of being stricter than cutting myself too much slack. :)

If it doesn't seem right to me I google it too..caloriecount.about.com is a great site to double check your calories. Also a lot of the recipies sites have calories too...like allrecipies.com :blushing: sorry if I sound like a commercial!

If you go to google and type in your search bar 28 grams to tablespoons or the like, it will give you the conversion you need.

I know it's not an exact science.......but it's pretty close, as I'm losing weight right on schedule.

If there is a "grams" option, I usually just pick another one....same with dry or cooked measurements where oats and pasta are concerned :-)

I have learned to measure a lot of things as well..instead of randomly adding nuts...or honey etc.... so I know exactly how much i used.

This is how I learned how easy it is to overdo it.........I always thought I ate very little. Now I see those extra tablespoons of butter, peanut butter etc. really add up!
  • I have found this a bit confusing, too, and just guess alot of times. It feels a bit obsessive sometimes which is why I have rejected other plans that require me to count calories.

I had noticed it says confirmations , but didn't know what it meant. I am brand new to this site and I'm having to learn a little at a time. I love it though. And yes, I also had rather go with the bigger amt than the less. I'm hoping when my week is up that I will have lost a little at least 1 or 2 lbs. And yes I love allrecipes.com.... Great recipes..

I love this way of putting the foods in and it calculating all the different things. I didn't realize how much I was eating. It's a wonder I don't weigh more than I do...

Never use measurements like 1 slice, 1 medium, etc, etc. They are averages and can be pretty far off. Always use a definitive unit of measure and the proper one for weight or volume.

Tablespoon is a fluid measurement and doesn't convert to weight. What weighs more, a tablespoon of lead or a tablespoon of feathers? You may be able to find web sites that have done the leg work of the conversions. The conversion has to be done for each specific food. http://www.gourmetsleuth.com
