Storm of the Century

Welcome everyone to the Storm of the Century. It's not just "my ice storm" anymore. It's a catastrophic storm that will affect large numbers of people in: North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arkansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Mississippi, Alabama, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Maryland, Rhode Island, Connecticut, West Virgina, Virginia, and Washington, DC.

There is a high likelihood of widespread, prolonged (3 days or more) power outages due to ice in: Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. Air temperatures in some of hardest hit areas will plunge into the single digits with wind chills below zero. Coupled with power outages, this does not make for a promising scenario.

If you are in one of the states I've mentioned here please check with your local news sources for the latest information, and stay tuned to the National Weather Service and NOAA Weather Radio. Make sure you have enough food, water and blankets to survive without power in freezing conditions for at least 3 days, but preferably 5 days. Make sure you have candles, flashlights and batteries.

If you are in one of the states I mentioned as being in danger of ICE, PLEASE make sure you track weather closely, and try to retain as much heat in your homes as possible.

The next few days are sure to present some of the worst weather that many areas have seen in decades, but by taking the proper precautions we can all help reduce the number of casualties, lessen the stress on emergency services, and come out of this storm system bruised but alive. ;) Good luck to all of you.

Indiana, that's me, oh boy!... Probably gonna telecommute tomorrow for work, but not sure what to do about my evening class. Hey, maybe they'll close campus? I think I'll be cranky if we get an inch of ice and they don't cancel...!

FARTHER SOUTH... INCLUDING THE CITIES OF TERRE HAUTE... INDIANAPOLIS... BLOOMINGTON... NEW CASTLE AND MUNCIE... WARM AIR IS EXPECTED TO BE PRESENT AND PRECIPITATION MAY FALL AS SLEET OR FREEZING RAIN. SIGNIFICANT ICE ACCUMULATION IS POSSIBLE... WITH ICE ACCUMULATION OF ONE INCH OR MORE. FURTHERMORE... STRONG WINDS GUSTING UP TO 35 MPH ARE EXPECTED FROM LATE TUESDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON. THIS COMBINATION WILL RESULT IN WIDESPREAD DOWNED TREES AND POWER LINES.

I am in Illinois about 65 miles west of Chicago. They are forcasting at least 18 inches of snow for us. To add one more loop hole....WE LIVE IN THE COUNTRY! However, that being said, we installed a natural gas powered generator 2 years ago because we do have freqent power outages out here. There are only 10 houses around me so we are not high on the priority list. Add in the fact that my husband has been orderd to work over time for the next 72 hours....Not complaining, much, but I will be snow bound with 2 young kids, a geriatric dog, and a kitten!

STAY SAFE! STAY OFF THE ROADS PEOPLE!

I'm sure it just has to do with having lived in the country but I can't imagine ONLY the following

"Make sure you have enough food, water and blankets to survive without power in freezing conditions for at least 3 days, "

I've got rice, beans, pasta on hand that I can eat for a month even if the roads are impassable, canned fish be it salmon, tuna, sardines, there's variety... there's peaches I canned this summer, veggies, I've got some meat jerky. It's just an every day thing for me to have the supply on hand. Only thing is perishable items pick them up once a week as needed when it's a trip made for something else anyway or do without. It's not hard to buy extra rice when it's on sale and put the additional bag away, or buy the 12pack of canned soup when it's on for $6 instead of $1.30 each can. Builds up a good stock that is available whatever happens. Just rotate products, when you bring in a new case of soup put the one closest to expiring at the front for first use.

Thanks for the warning. I live in NH for us it is just another storm. I know it is wide spread but didn't think about the other parts of the country that aren't used to it. I also just put into perspetive the fact that everyone is going to be trying to take care of themselves there just won't be enough help to go around. (not impy people being greedy but a few years ago we had a real bad ice storm and people came from far away to help. This time they will be busy helping locally to travel up here to help out.)

I hope you all stay safe and healthy.

I am in Illinois in the St Louis Metro area and we are getting sleet and freezing rain as I speak.

My husband said that roads are bad, but I am stuck at work because my job says that roads aren't "that" bad...........

Meanwhile, Interstate 70 is partly shut down due to a pile up from the icy roads..............

I am praying that the power does not go out. This is what has me the most worried. I have a fire place so we will just burn wood and sleep in our living room for heat, but not being able to cook is another story in itself.

I am here in Michigan and am NOT excited about this storm. A Coworker of mine says all this is a hoax to boast the economy, since people go crazy spending money on supplies. God, I hope she is right!

I don't think she is right. I hope she does go buy some staple supplies. It would be awful for her to get caught unprepared.

I am in Southwest Missoui. Here we are expected to recieve 12-18 inches, we are on a farm with cows to feed, so it will be interesting. We had a MAJOR ice storm in 2007 with our power out for almost a week. So I hope we have learned a few lessons from that and we won't have as many outages.

Yeah, I'm just super excited about it here in Nebraska. :ohwell: We just had some nice days to melt all our ice off, and now we're getting more. Freaking awesome. Good thing I went grocery shopping this morning, or we'd be eating saltines and ketchup for the next couple of days.
