Hi everyone!
I was recently diagnosed with diabetes. Anyone have any good tips for keeping blood sugar in check like tips on eating or amount of exercise, etc. I follow exchange diet but just wondered if anyone could give me any other ideas for living with this. thanks!

01welcome7jb.gifThere's lots of us Diabetics on here! I'm type 2, diagnosed about 6 years ago.

Anyway, there is SO MUCH to deal with about this disease. I really suggest you also join a diabetes specific forum and get help on there.

For one, diabetes is a highly individualized disease--meaning what works for me might not work for you. So the best thing is to learn as much as you possibly can and experiment, test, experiment, test, experiment, test, etc. etc. etc.

Watch your carbs, watch your sugars, and watch your sodium! As you might already know, diabetics are prone to heart disease and usually high blood pressure goes hand in hand with diabetes.

There is hope though and you've come to the right place! MFP can help you track your intakes--tracking is vital for diabetics! of food and glucose levels!

Here's a good forum you can check out just for diabetics:

i agree with shorerider...it's so different for everyone. i followed a carb count way of eating, now i do calorie count. make sure you see your doctor every 3 months for your blood work. your A1C is really important to track. also pay attention to how you feel. if i am feeling tired or i start getting moody, shaky. i test and 9 times out of 10 i am either high or low. you have to take care of you...
    good luck,

Meant to add that since joining MFP, I finally got my diabetes under control and am working on getting off my pills completely. when I joined in April, my a1C was 7.5--in July, it was 5.2!

1 tsp. of cinnamon daily and taking biotin and chromium picolate. Between that and diet and exercise, I lowered my blood sugar from 128 to 108.

I've found it very helpful for my mood, health, & higher energy level for working out to go with 6 small meals a day rather than merely eating 3 times. Keeps blood sugars more level for anyone diabetic or not from what I understand..and it's definitely worked in my favor!

... Like has been already shared...it truly is individual. I also make sure before working out to grab a carb/protein combo and then again after working out I do the same. But again I think that's often seen as a positive move for many that workout.

Again, all individual as some may have other ways to share what works for them before and after workout... WHICH BTW...I would love to hear if anyone has found things that work...to replace the carbs/protein lost during workouts...other methods I mean:wink:

Great group of ppl here!

Looks like you got a link to a site so that should shed light on it for you as well. :)
