protein shake questions

I'm staying with my in-laws at the moment, and my mother in law is always on a diet. She's not majorly overweight but has an incredibly painful back problem that stops her from doing most exercise. However she often drinks protein shakes, which I've always understood to only be helpful if you're doing strength training, is that right? Should i say anything? I think she's read so much diet advice that she doesn't know herself what she wants to eat or what diets she wants to follow, so i don't want to make things worse!

protein shakes are great for losing weight as long as they are correct!
When you're trying to lose weight- as I am, you have to make sure it has lots of protein but not an overload of calories or carbs!
The one I drink after workouts is Jillian Michaels to go chocoalte protein shake- its like 140 calories, and 20 grams of protein.
If I make myself one int he morning I usually just mix a scoop of pure protein vanilla (20 grams a scoop) with non fat chocolate milk or a light vitamin water.
Ever since I started upping my protein, esp after a workout in these ways, I lost more!0 -
they arent only for strength training. I drink them for the protein and enjoy them0

Protein intake after a strength training is important! But a protein shake is just a good dietary supplement of protein for anyone. It's an easy way to balance out your macro's. I don't think a 75% carb 25% fat 0% protein diet is good for anyone! haha.0

Check out Consumer Reports review of 15 different protein drinks. I was using Muscle Milk, and do not after reading about the traces of heavy metals in many of the products.
As far as use, I only use them for strength training recovery/muscle building. I personally feel that diets don't work. I believe in eating appropriate amounts of real food. To borrow a phrase from Michael Pollan, eat food, not too much, mostly vegetables.0 -
From my experience, protein shakes are essential when you're doing strength training and helpful when you're not exercising, but not for the same reasons. I drink protein immediately after lifting weights in order to feed my muscles and promote recovery. I use BSN Syntha 6, which tastes delicious and has several different kinds of proteins that are digested at different rates. For those not exercising, protein shakes satisfy the need for a nutritious, relatively low calorie meal substitute. I'd endorse a 200 calorie meal with 22 grams of protein and 5 grams of fiber over a slice of pizza any day, and that's what I get from one scoop of Syntha 6 in water.
If she's using protein shakes like milkshakes and drinking them with meals, it's just extra calories and pretty much a waste of money because she doesn't have enough muscle mass to require the large amount of protein provided by a shake.0
