Need help with strength training!

I've been mixing cardio and strength training at the gym for the last 5 weeks. After being sick and missing the gym for an entire week, I go back today and lifted a little more than normal and don't feel much other than a tiny bit of soreness in my shoulders. I know I shouldn't workout so hard that I can't do anything the rest of the day but I like to feel something because it makes me feel like I actually got a good workout in. Right after the workout my body felt like jello and I thought for sure I'd feel it later. So does this mean I'm improving or that I didn't do enough?

I would suggest that it means that you let your body heal for a couple of days! With strength training, you are stressing the muscles, if you lift to exaustion (can't do any more reps) then it will probably take more than 1day for that muscle to fully heal. A good lifting plan will work different muscle groups on different days, legs and back day 1, chest and arms day2, day 3 shoulders, etc. A web search will provide you better info than i have hear. You can do cardio every day, you cannot strength train same muscle group every day! Good luck!0

I used to lift a lot of weights. I always knew I had a good workout when I struggled to wash my hair or the legs felt a little wobbly on the stairs. You might not be in pain after every workout.0

When you do weight (resistance training) you in a manner damage you muscles with rest they heal and add muscle. When you take an extended rest from resistance training, Planed or not, your muscles have a chance to heal hence you can lift more. Great time to up the weight or rep/sets
If you feel like "jello" your muscle probably need fed especially if you worked out after cardio.0
