Extra calories and late night eating...

Don't know if this is a stupid question or not...for the past couple of days I've had loads of calories left, about 500 kcal or more. This is after I have eaten and logged all of my meals, snacks and all so I definitely have not been starving myself. For the past few nights, I don't know if it's because of the coldness, I've been craving snacks late at night. I normally have dinner between 6 - 7pm and go to bed around 12:30am. Lately at around 10pm, I get so munchy and I want to eat. I've been snacking on salty seaweed they are about 70kcal per 100gram. I wanted to know since I have all of these extra calories left, technically if I'm eating, it is still within my calorie count, is that right? Or because I'm eating so late, food is not going to digest properly and it will just 'stay' and turn into fat?

I'm just curious cuz I weighed myseif and I've gained some weight this morning...not loads but it's concerned me...

Hope that made sense...

Tiffany

There is nothing wrong with eating at night. It's become one of the biggest dieting myths out there.

Eating at night is bad if you use it to go over your calories or to eat junk food. A lot of people do this, which is why night eating has gotten a bad rap. However, since you are not doing any of these things, there is absolutely nothing wrong with night eating for you.

Are u staying within your sodium levels ? ...if you say you are eating salty seaweed the slat could be holding on to some water !

i dont think the nightime eating is a problem .. i eat my dinner at 8 or 9 all throughout my weightloss and it hasnt affected me :0)

if you are still within your cals and it doesn't push you over then I don't see a problem with what time you eat provided its a healthy snack and not loaded in fats x

Ohh that's good to know. I've been eating these baked seaweed my mother sent from Taiwan...I checked and there's no transfat so that's a good thing. Sodium does see a bit high so I think you're right about me retaining water...because I feel a bit bloated in the morning...

I have kept it within my calories but was just concerned...I definitely have to read about the late night eating myth! Thanks guys for such quick responses!
  • You might want to try a bowl of oatmeal to satisfy those cravings. It's nature's perfect food.

I can't...I can't eat oatmeal...I've never had oatmeal in my life...it's rare for Asian households to have oatmeal so I've never had them and I don't know...they kind of make me sick...can I eat a bowl of miso soup instead??

It definitely might be the sodium, but as long as you give yourself a good 2.5 hours to digest before you go to bed, night eating isn't terrible.
  • If you are following your plan, eat vegetables at night if hungry. You might want to try increasing your protein a bit as it is filling. Increase the water you drink, it is filling and it helps you lose the weight. These are ideas my nutritionist gave me and they work. I am not allowed to eat night snacks.

Actually that may bring up another question...I ALWAYS go over my protein allowance...and always have plenty of carbs and fats left...is that okay? Could I possibly be eating too much protein??
