fiber vs. protein

I have a question. Which will keep me full longer, fiber or protein? I know that it is important to have a high fiber and high protein diet when losing weight, but which is better for keeping you less hungry through out the day?

    Probably fiber but it is good to have them in combination.

  • OK, so I am a GI nurse, so I am going to endorse fiber here. It is crucial that you consume 20-30 grams of fiber daily. I was doing Metamucil sugar free orange in the am and pm. I have kinda fallen off the wagon, but I need to get back on. When I drank 1TBSP of orange flavored Metamucil (mixed with 20 ounces of water) with breakfast and dinner, I felt full WAY quicker. It really doesn't taste bad. I don't like the pink lemonade or berry. The berry stains everything and the pink lemonade gave me heartburn. Anyways, Metamucil is also clinically proven to reduce bad (LDL) cholesterol and elevate good (HDL) cholesterol with consistent use.
    In my professional and personal opinion, high fiber and high protein together would be the best. I think they are equally important, but I think that high fiber will make you "feel full" longer.

    Fiber hands down. Protein is important, but frankly it has never kept me full for a long time. Fiber, on the other hand, is vital to overall digestive health. It absorbs water when in your GI tract, and thus gives you a nice full feeling. I actually pay attention to my fiber numbers and the more fiber I have, the more full I keep feeling.

    Thanks for the advice. I've been taking the Fiber Choice sugar free tablets, but I hate chewing them up. It's almost as bad as antacid tablets. Yuck!

    It shouldn't be an either/or situation. A healthy, well-balanced diet should have enough fiber AND protein. Some of the best snacks are ones with fiber-filled carbs that are paired with protein and healthy fat, such as fruit with some peanut butter or cheese or fruit with non-skim cottage cheese, or fruit&nut bars (like Lara bars).

    I don't understand the intent of this question. Individual preferences/body-type/etc. will impact exactly what satisfies each person the most, but in reality BOTH high fiber and adequate protein are best.

    Due to years of IBS and extreme abdominal distension that has stretched my belly worse than my pregnancy, I'm finally on what my old GI specialist calls "Fiber Therapy". I take Fibercon swallowable pills. For the longest time up until a month or two ago, my fiber intake was HORRID!! I just knew it must be playing a part in my gastro issues. So he told me to start of with one Fibercon pill a day for 3-4 weeks.....then go to 1 1/2 pills for 3-4 weeks, then 2 pills.......he said you don't want to just start off with too much fiber off the bat from a supplement cuz that's what causes abdominal cramping and stuff. Your body has to adjust. I know mine has to! He said it could take anywhere from 3 or more months for the benefits of fiber to relieve gastrointestinal distension and issues......pretty interesting! Actually, weren't you just concerned about what was more filling? And look what I gave you....a remedy for gastro problems. Ha! Oh well!
