Has anyone ever had ITBS or runner's knee? I am experiencing pain on the outside of my left knee. It starts about 10 minutes into my run and gets worse as I go, so I've been cutting my runs short. Other than leg lifts what can I do to strengthen the muscles and help heal this? I'm in the middle of gettting ready for my first 10k, and I don't want to cause a major set back.
How long does it usually take to work through this? I wouldn't say I'm in pain, just uncomfortable, it feels strained:grumble:

I had an issue with my knees after a year and a half of running. After visiting an ortho and getting shots in my knee, I was still in pain. Thankfully, a friend referred me to his chiropractor and after ONE adjustment I could feel a difference. Now I go right in when I have discomfort (2 adjustments in the last year) and I've been able to run pain free. This is my first experience with chiropractic care and I have been pleasantly surprised at how well it has worked.0

I had an ITBS while training for a race. I saw and orthopeadist and he said I had to rest it, do stretches then icing until it heals then slowly start my miles up again.
Mine was on the outside of my hip and I kept running until I got shooting pains down to my knee. I dont' know what you do for runners knee, but I know with ITBS it is a super slow recovery, at least it was for me. I couldn't increase my miles as quickly as I wanted and I remember only being able to run 8 miles and then the pain would come back.
That was in 2006, since then I've done a 10k and a half and it doesn't bother me any more. I am really deligent about my cross training though. Good luck. I hope yours heals quickly.0 -

I have a messed up ITB and there isn't a "cure" or "fix". If you didn't pop it too bad, make sure you warm it up REALLY well before running and make sure it's not inflamed before you start; and believe me, you know.... if it's bad enough, it hurts from your hip to your toes and looks like someone shoved a golf-ball under your skin on the outside of your knee (mine gets pretty nasty).
Do some research online; there's exercises available to help ensure it's getting properly worked. Be careful - this isn't an injury to mess with. If you can get PT, I'd recommend it. DO NOT COMPRESSION BRACE IT! I made this mistake early on and it's hell. Also, try alternating ice & heat if it acts up along with an OTC anti-inflammatory. I can't take ice myself so I tend to stick with a heating pad to keep the muscles from spasming on top of the swelling. The site of the injury will most likely be where the ITB attaches to your Ilium. If you can find someone that can dig in past the glutes and get to it and massage, that helps too.

If this is an ITB, then I don't think a chiro will be able to do much. This isn't an adjustment issue - its a tendon. Although regular adjustments and massage are great preventives and can aid in teh recovery of many injuries, I wouldn't count this among them. I could be wrong.... but that's what I know of chiropracters & ITBS.0 -

Thank you for all the info! Mine is definetly not as irritated as what you described. My husband thinks I should go to his joint dr. Maybe I'll see a specialist too. Probably a good idea, this doesn't sound like an injury to mess around with:(
Thanks again:flowerforyou:0
