ok now i know this is an odd question, but im going to ask cause im not sure..........i do my weigh in and measurements every friday, and im confused, i lost half a pound and most of my measurements were either the same or a little bit below, except for my hips, (i carry a lot of weight below my bellybutton) i GAINED 3 1/2 inches in a week! so my question is can your weight shift?

Water retention, bloating and TOM will do it to ya! If you are doing "everything right" don't sweat the small inconsistancies in either weight or measurements. It's all part of life. Give it a few days and lots of water and you will be back to normal.
  • most likely the tape measure was in a different position, though bloating could be the problem, but even that seems excessive.

When measuring your thigh did you measure so many inches up from the knee so your in the same spot everytime? Don't give up just perhaps write it down and see what it says next week. I have large thighs too and seem to be losing in my back/chest area and arms but not so much in my thighs and waist yet. Keep with it

Yes. Weight [as in numbers] does shift. Do you mean does it shift to different parts of your body? All of the factors already mentioned do apply. Another aspect of those factors could include muscle gain. Are you doing any exercises where you could be building muscle? At first they can swell up and retain water, but after a while when they get used to the routine, they'll start working more efficiently at losing the fluid around it. Give it another couple of weeks to a month and see if the measurements start decreasing by then.
  • I've had the same thing happen. I lost 5 inches on my hips, 3 from my chest but gained 2 in my waist. I'm sure it was water retention or part of my monthly cycle. Don't let it discourage you.

to answer your question of muscle.......yes i do weight lifting, i have been really trying hard to do a muscle group a day, for example mon = chest, tues = abs, wed = shoulders/biceps/triceps, thurs = legs, fri = back......i have been doing this since the beginning, im also trying extremely hard to do some sort of cardio every day as well

I think hip measurements can be tricky, especially for those of us carrying extra weight in that area. I never feel like I'm getting an accurate number because there are other things in the way.

I would expect that you either measured in a slightly different spot or the weight has shifted. At this point, I'm not sure there is any way to be sure one way or the other...unless you use a permanent marker to draw the exact spot where you measured yourself and don't wash it off! You could use that as a guide each week but it might look a little funny to anyone that saw it.
