I'm told that 3,070 calories is more then a very active person should be eating. What do you think? Can anyone explain to me why I should be eating so many calories?

You shouldn't.0

Can you give a little more background about this? Like, where did that number come from? Is that what MFP says you should be eating, or somewhere else?0
-
That sounds like enough calories FOR A MARATHON RUNNER...Yeah that sounds WAY too high0

Did you enter your weight in lbs but have the settings at KG so instead of say 200 lbs you entered 200 kgs which is about 440lbs.
I do see your goal is to lose 250 lbs, so 250 lbs maintenance alone would be like 2400 cals, so at your weight that may actually be right. What did you set your weekly weight loss goal too. since you have a lot to lose you should try setting it at 2 lbs/week.0 -
I'm very curious where you got that number also. If it's MFP, I'm betting you mis-entered some info somewhere.0

Yes, my fitness pal showed me this. I double checked the info and this is still what it states. Hmmmm..0
-
I just checked it all again. Information is correct! They "recommend" that you lose 1lb per week and this is the calories they are giving me. I even checked the box that I sit all day. I have no gotten in all the calories and I'm just very confused. lol0

I went into the database just to play around with the numbers. I guestimated at 440lbs starting weight and 190lbs goal weight, sedentary job. Initially, the lb per week loss was automatically set to GAIN 2lbs per week, and I received the 3900 number. When I changed it to LOSE 1lb per week, it decreased to 2900 cal/day. I know you said you checked and double-checked, so maybe there is a computer glitch?0
-
but just looking at your original post, there is only an 80 cal difference from my guestimation, so maybe that is correct. I'm not a nutritionist or medical expert, so maybe it would be a good idea to contact your doctor just to be on the safe side.0

I think he's got it right. I know 3000 looks like a lot, but with the food out there nowadays it's really not hard to get that high. I entered some of the foods that I ate daily in the past and some days I went over 5000 easily. So just eat cleaner food and follow the numbers and you should start to see results!0 -

It depends on many factors including height, age, activity, level and current weight.
If you have a lot of weight on your frame it increases the power requirements necessary simply to carry out your actvities of daily living. For example if you made me wear a backpack with 150lbs of weight on it constantly then the physical exertion it would take me to do regular things like walking would be much greater meaning I would need many more calories per day.
It is generally not recommended to have a aggressive deficit of 1000 calories under the amount your body needs to maintain itself (equivalent to 2lbs weight loss per week) as you tend to lose much more lean mass (including muscle) than fat with this approach. With people who have a lot to lose however (say in excess of 100lbs) then this is much less of a problem and in fact the inverse tends to be true. Therefore setting up a very aggressive deficit intially can be very beneficial. If that is the case for you then you may want to try 2000 calories per day and then reassess after a few weeks.

I'm currently 450.... want to get down to 200. I'm 5'9 and it's still showing me the same thing. A friend of mine who had the gastric bypass in march had said it's correct that the larger you are you kind of ween yourself down with eating or else you are starving your body. Another said this is incorrect. But i've tried several times to update it and it's giving me the same totals.0

THAT sounds like to much to me, but where did you get that total?0
-
If that is what it says, may be you should speak to a doctor about it! Best wishes!0

You should consult your doctor.0

450,,,good for you to start this journy,,,,, If I were you I would seek professional help (your doctor) 3000 cals are not that much considering your current weight and where you want to go. Here is my advice, and again plaes see your doctor, go with the numbers they show, do that for a few weeks and see what happens. If it works for you keep it up for a couple months, give your body time to adjust. When you feel you are ready I would reset your goals to lose 2 lbs a week,
Just to compair, I'm a man 6'2" weigh 255 and my goal is 205, I have mine set to lose 2.5 a week, and with exercise I get 2600 cals a day or something like that.
Again GOOD FOR YOU, you can do this, but please if you haven't yet, see your doctor0 -
I agree with what others have posted.
I see you have now mentioned you weigh 450lbs. There are other health consideration at play given your high starting point so it never hurts to check with your health professionals before starting a weight loss / exercise regime.0
