So if I burn 750 calories on a hike am i supposed to eat that much more food to reach my daily calorie goal? It seems like I shouldn't because what was the point of excersizing just to put more in my mouth?

I don't eat my calories to lose weight. I always here calories in, calories out to lose. And it's worked so far!

I read a post on here that said you need to eat the extra calories to get your engine (muscles) moving to burn off the fat and that if you habitually skip eating your exercise calories back, your muscles will not have what they need to burn the fat.0

I had the same problem...I met my calorie goal, then exercised, then completed my diary. I get an error message that says I didn't meet the minimum calorie intake. You need to read the 1200 a day to keep your metabolism going and avoid malnutrition. Even though I am overweight, I can still be malnourished if not taking in enough nutrients. Keep up the good work!0

I almost NEVER eat exercise calories... Unless I swim laps and then I might just be so ravenous I have to tear into a few... but yes, other wise I would find it counter productive :flowerforyou:0

In short, you should replace at least some of those cals. MFP already has a built in cal deficit, before exercise. If you don't replace exercise cals, you are making the deficit larger (and not fueling the body properly.) Here are some great threads that explain why - MUST READS! Good luck to you!

Ugh! I hate this topic...LOL! I struggled with this for the longest time and finally talked to some people on here and a couple of trainers at work who said that sort of defeats the purpose. Don't let that MFP message about starving your body scare you either. That's just there to cover MFP's butt. I'm allotted 1200 calories a day and I stick to that limit whether I exercise or not.0

I suspect you didn't explain it to those trainers properly. If you did not explain that MFP has a built in deficit - regardless of exercise - and that NOT eating exercise cals makes that deficit larger (ie more than your chosen loss per week goal), then they do not have all the info. Most trainers will tell you that you need to fuel the body - and that a healthy weight loss goal for most people (with less than 80 lbs to lose) is no more than 2 lbs per week, and that trying to lose too quickly is a recipe for failure and ending up skinnyfat.0 -
If I am hungry for them, I eat them. A lot of times lately, I have been exercising every day just so I can get the extra calories, because I want to eat! I'm losing weight faster than my goal, so it can't be all that bad.
Links were provided by previous posters, there have been a lot of great discussions regarding this and I hope you read them, they are eye opening!0
