Junk?

I heard the other day that irritating nutritionist Gillian McKieth state that "Junk foods like Doner kebabs......." . Now although I've not had one for months, is a Doner Kebab, made up of spit roasted lamb, salad and pita bread, really that bad?? Surely not in the same bracket as Pie & Chips?

I have to says i consider its "junk" food is made lamb "meat" the one i have seen don't look like a leg of lamb!
That been said once in a blue moon it would do you no harm. I would never choose to have one the smell is enough to send me running... Moderation in all things!0 -
Dont know how true it is, but selective sheep breeding in Turkey now produces lambs with three foot long conical legs, and no joints in the bones. Very handy.0

I wouldnt eat one unless ive done a lot of exercise that week0

Isn't there supposed to be about 1000 calories in a doner? Not sure how though-perhaps its an urban myth! Chicken shish is definitely supposed to better- with pitta, salad and a tablespoon of ketchup, it's always preferable to a late night snack of carrot sticks...once in a blue moon though!0

Nope - totally true! A small donner kebab has around 1000-1200 calories, a large one has 1200-1400 calories. Definitely not a good choice!
Though it may sound healthy due to the ingredients, things to remember!
1) Its not lamb per se - its mechanically reclaimed sheep meat! I.e. Take a bit of lamb, take a bit of mutton, take a bit of whatever else is lying around at the time (connective tissues, fats, organs) - blast it off the bone with a water cannon - compress it in to a cylinder shape and cook it X-number of times. That's donner meat!
2) Even if it was 100% lamb, lamb is incredibly high in fat and definitely not a good choice of meat!
3) You could probably set up a rig on the side of a standard kebab and mine enough oil to keep your car running for a month! Ever had a look at the bottom of the packet of an unfinished one the following morning...? Gross!
4) The sauce is made with vast quantities of mayonnaise (egg, vinegar and oil) plus a liberal dashing of sugar!
Sadly even the chicken shish kebabs (which ARE 'healthier' then the donners...but still not actually healthy at all!) are still drenched in oil. I had one a few months back and ended up just eating the chicken and leaving the rest as the pitas were soggy from oil.
All that said - I still eat them on occassion, English tradition and all that! ;o)0
