So.. I took a home pregnancy test this morning and it was positive. :) This is good news! We have been trying for a few months to conceive. I'm calling the doctor right now to schedule an appointment for today. I think I'm about 4 weeks pregnant..

I looked online for how many calories you should eat per day, and it says you shouldn't change much for the first trimester. I'm only eating about 1300 net calories a day, and I know this shouldn't be maintained for too much longer.. so I guess I'm just going to start eating about 2000 calories a day and lower the intensity of my workouts.

I have two stepkids (who I consider my own), but this is my first baby with my husband.

Anyone have any advice for this new mother? I understand I'll be gaining some weight during pregnancy but I really don't want to gain more than I'm supposed to. Thank you, all.

Congrats, you might want to change your goal to maintenance or at most to lose 0.5 lbs per week, this should give you more than 1300, and I would start this right away 1300 is to lose weight and being pregnant I'm not sure if you want to lose very much at all.
  • Congratulations hope you have a wonderful pregnency. Regards how many calories etc. your doctor would be the best person to advise on that. I would say just eat healthy food with healthy portions and you won't go far wrong. Just avoid rubbish foods. Good luck.
  • Congrats! I agree about asking your doctor/OB about how to eat and what type of exercise you should/can do. Happy and healthy 9 months! You should check out babycenter.com!

Many congrats on your wonderful news.

My understanding is as you've said you don't need to really increase your cal intake, however, by doing so and the right foods - healthy well balanced your baby will get all the nutrients, vitamins and minerals needed - you'll get the left over so to speak.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Get the book what to expect when you're expecting. It is a really great guide. I'm a mom of four and pulled it out each time! Congrats!!

First and foremost, you should come join the pregnancy thread! Everyone on there is either pregnant or trying to conceive, and there is a lot of great information shared between everyone. Several first time moms (like myself!) and a few veterans!

For now, I would set your cals to maintenance. Every woman and every pregnancy is different though, so listen to your body.

Ask your doctor what they think when you go. No better consultant! I only gained 23lbs with my pregnancy so it's definitely not impossible to not gain a whole bunch of weight. The most important thing is to take care of yourself and ask a million questions.
  • you shouldnt try to lose weight while pregnant.... typically you only need to eat an extra 300 cals a day...i have had two kiddos...they will want you to gain weight..depending on your size if your overweight its about 15 lbs if your average its 20-25..if your under weight its more... a great website to look at during pregnancy is www.babycenter.com. and congratulations!
