Medication that make people gain weight

I have been struggling to lose weight for a couple of years now, part of it before now was I just wasn't ready mentally. I had an abusive ex husband who was very mean about my weight. I went from 135 to 150 and he gave me so much **** for it. I went from that to 160, then 170, 180, to almost 200 pounds. He left me because of it, thank god, but now I am on a medication that is making me gain weight. I am on Remeron and it is known to make people gain weight. I gained over 10 pounds my first month using it and I was eating 1500-1800 calories and walking 5 miles a day.:frown: I have been taking it for like 6 months now and I have gained about 20 pounds eating around 1500 calories and walking 2 miles a day and going to the gym 3 days a week. I talked to my boyfriend and friend at work and they have no idea why I am gaining weight. They both see me at different times so I know I am not cheating, even though I am feel like I am doing something wrong. I am going to the doctor on January 13th and hopefully this doctor will get me off the medicine. The doctor I had told me it should start coming off after the first month, but it never did. It makes me mad. I also read on line that the medication can increase your blood sugar and cholesterol, and this doctor was so adamant on me losing weight, I don't understand why he put me on this crap. Well I cancelled the appointed with the doctor who put me on it because he was mean about my weight, and I asked for my blood work, my blood sugar is up and he never told me. I never had a problem with it before now. It makes me really upset. It's also the type of medication (antidepressant, but used for sleep) that I can't just stop taking. The withdrawal medication really freaked me out so I am going to wait for the doctor to tell me what to do. I just hope he can get me off the medicine and I start losing weight. I am trying so hard to lose weight and just gaining. I hope when I get off the medicine the weight just melts off. Probably not, but it's nice to hope.

Sorry, I guess I just need a place to vent, has anyone else ever had experiences with a medication that made them gain weight while they were trying to lose weight?

I've been there! I started on Paxil after having female issues. Basically, my OB/GYN put me on a medication that put me in a chemical menopause at 28 years old and then decided I needed the Paxil because of the *****iness. I gained 100 pounds in a year, as a personal trainer in the gym daily and on the healthiest diet I've ever eaten. Needless to say, I actually did get depressed because of it so the doctor thought she needed to give me more and added Wellbutrin to the mix. The good news is that once I got off the medication, I lost the weight in about 6 months. The bad news is that I was stupid enough to go off of it cold turkey. I was homicidal coming off it, so I don't recommend going off cold turkey. Follow your new doctors orders for coming off the medication. Maybe try some natural sleep aids as you come off of it to see if you can keep from having to take any other medications? I know a nice cup of hot tea or cocoa does wonders for my sleep, as does a hot bath before bed. There are also herbals, but I can't think of them off the top of my head. If you ever just want to talk, or vent, please feel free to add me as a friend and PM me. :flowerforyou:
  • OMG that is so horrible. I am sorry that happened to you. So you lost the 100 pounds in 6 months? If so that is amazing. That gives me hope. I called the doctor and asked his receptionist to ask the doctor about how to get off the medicine. I told her what's going on and she will call him about it tomorrow (he is on vacation.) I didn't think about doing this when I cancelled my appointment because I thought my new doctors appointment would come sooner and honestly I just didn't want to deal with it. But after working so hard and still gaining weight, the fact that it's suppose to help me sleep and it's not, and hearing that the medication can increase your blood sugar and cholesterol, I knew I had to get off. I just found all this out last night. I knew about the blood sugar, and noticed mine is high (even though I have never had a problem with my blood sugar), so it all hit me last night and I am happy I called. She told me that she will call me back because he was on vacation, so everything happens for a reason. i didn't want to talk to him so I think it worked out fine. I hope that I can get off the medicine quickly and the pounds start melting off. I am not counting on it, but I am hoping.
  • Hello Tanya, I'm new here myself. I basically keep track of my food intake. This Sept 2011, will be 6yrs since my Complete Hysterectomy. At the time I was 35yrs old with major health issues.
I also have Celiac Disease, IBS & Lactose Intolerance, I'm trying so hard staying within my calories intake at 1870. But when I don't eat enough I get Low Blood Sugar.......I get the shakes, weaking in my legs, felt so tired, light headed.
I am over weight, My height is 5.5 weight 190lbs, I can look at food gained weight. Gluten Free foods IS NOT feeling, my doctors want me to eat every 2-3 hrs due to low blood sugar.
How are you doing on your journey?
