Hard time sleeping

Hey all, so the past week or so I have had a really hard sleeping or staying a sleep. I usually go to bed around 11 and wake up around 7. But I have been having problems...
1. Falling asleep..I end up falling asleep at around 3 after staring at the ceiling for hours....
2. Staying asleep..I fall asleep at my normal bedtime and then wake up around 3 or 4 and can't go back to bed
I am a student and this has been effecting my performance in class...as well as my weight loss goals..if it continues I will be forced to see a doctor, however I want to see if there are any remedies I can try ...to see if those work.
Anyone have or had this problem?

I have the same problem, but nothing is wrong with me according to the sleep clinic I attended. I am hoping that exercise will help with my sleeping issues over time.0

When are you working out? Many people have difficulty sleeping if they workout too late in the day. This wakes your body up and releases adrenaline that can keep you awake later. Also, do you drink a lot of caffeine? If so, try cutting back and making sure you don't drink it in the afternoon/evening. Try drinking some herbal tea before bed, and doing some gentle stretches. I've always had a lot of trouble sleeping, and I still sleep a lot less than I should. I tried a lot of things to help, but what made the most and easiest difference for me:
Turn off the computer and TV an hour or more before bedtime. The blue light from the screens is interpreted by our bodies as "daylight", so it messes with your circadian rhythm and makes it harder to fall asleep.0 -
There is an herbal supplement called Melatonin that works great for helping you get to sleep and stay there. Its non addictive and inexpensive. You can find it just about anywhere. I had the same problem when I was exercising and dieting the last time and it was suggested to me. It works wonderfully and you won't feel tired or beat up all day after taking it.0

I would recommend a chamomile tea. nothing with caffeine.0

not sure, but also make sure you are eating enough. when i was eating very little (a long time ago), i developed insomnia.0

Lavender oil is good to help with sleeping - either a little drop of oil on your pillow, or a lavender scented sachet or cream.
Good luck - don't forget, sleep deprivation was used as a form of torture, so not getting a good night's sleep will really show!0 -

I cut out all caffeine after 2pm. A few other tricks.....I turn out the lights around 10p so I start to think it is bed time. ANd I found doing some light yoga and meditation before bed helps. Around 10:30 or so. Good luck! I have battled insomnia since childhood.0

I've been having similar issues with sleeping as well. I've been working nightshift (11pm-7am) for over 3 years now, so right there my sleep is kinda messed up, as I'm getting into bed when everyone else is going to work. Recently I was promoted to being in charge on my shift, which has caused me to lose sleep simply because I could not shut my brain off when I lay in bed. I've gotten in the habit of falling asleep with the the tv on very low in the background, or I sometimes use this app on my ipone which turns it into one of those sound machines. (It's called White Noise.) One of my friends suggested rubbing Gold Bond lotion that has menthol in it on your back. Lately I've been getting more sleep, however it's not uncommon for me to wake up after 5-6 hours.0
