Losing weight on vacation

I leave tomorrow morning for a 7 day cruise. I've had amazing momentum since I started my fitness challenge 11 days ago, and I have no doubt that I'll keep that momentum up. But I'm worried about not having many healthy options once I get to the airport tomorrow and then at the hotel Saturday night into Sunday. The ship leaves Sunday night, and once I'm there it should be easier because they'll have a lot of healthy options (lots of fresh fruit, veggies, etc.). Plus the ship has a fitness center. I want to enjoy myself since I spent a good deal of money on the cruise, but at the same time I don't want to splurge just because I'm on vacation.

Any tips for how to continue losing weight on vacation?

Just remember---we don't go on vacation to eat----we go to enjoy the company of the people we are with as well as the surroundings around us.

Try to pack some healthy snacks for the first day or two that will travel well. Maybe some fresh veggies that you can nibble on. Some cuts of lean protein, nuts. When you go out to eat, just make very healthy choices--they are out there--we just have to find them or better yet---TELL THEM (the servers) what we want in order to make it healthy.

Funny that you posted this. My cousin just went on a cruise over new year's. I told her there was no way I could do it will all of that food. She said that she actually lost 7 pounds while they were gone because they did so much walking and because even though there are buffets all over the place, they have really healthy choices on them.

For me, when I go on vacation I get this 'vacation mentality' where it doesn't matter what I do, it's vacation! But then reality hits like a ton of bricks when I get home. So try to avoid the 'vacation mentality'. I'd say continue logging your calories if possible (even jotting down in a notebook with estimated guesses), because it'll keep you from multiple trips to the dessert bar. Plan more for 'maintenance calories' than 'weight loss calories' - give yourself an extra few hundred a day to enjoy yourself, but not an extra thousand or two where you'll feel it when you're done.

for me, once I get into my vacation mentality, I can't get out of it until the vacation is over. It's dangerous. :) Good luck and enjoy yourself!

When I am on holiday I swim... Normally in the pool (not the sea) and I try to get in as many laps early in day and late in afternoon.

When I lost weight a few years ago I went 3/4 week long holiday and was fine {eating healthy in the day-time, an evening meal out - semi healthy and wine !!!) But I did swim a lot !!!

Also, take some healthy snacks in your carry on bag. That way, if you feel like you are getting hungry or need a snack, you will have it right there with you.
  • Sounds like you have a good plan! Stay focused! Enjoy but not to excess and exercise while you are gone. You'll feel great if you do!

I'm on vacation now and going to restaurants is a treat. I'm ordering wisely for my main course and sharing a fun/decadent appetizer - and drinking lots of soda water with my wine :)
I brought some dried fruits to have instead of chips and crap at our condo and making sure I have a fruit/yogurt smoothie in the AM before any food is around.

Make sure those with you are going to be supportive - that is huge.
Good luck! You can do it!

I think you have the right idea already.....you know you'll be tempted, and you are preparing to deal with it. Use the fitness center when you can. Take some healthy snacks with you when you go to the airport so that you can eat them rather than what might be offered on the plane.
Salads are usually a good choice at restaurants.
But most of all, HAVE FUN!!!!! You are on the right track, and if you can maintain during your vacation, you will be doing great!

  • I have been on a lot of cruises and I remember the very first time I lost weight (before having kids) was on a cruise. I filled up on so much canteloupe. haha I think you have the right idea...fruits and veggies. Also, I like the 1st ladies advice, just remember why you are there...not to eat. Just remember how you will feel if you come home still in control as apposed to a big weight gain. I still remember coming home from that cruise with a weight loss and it was an amazing feeling.

Have fun!!!! You sound like you already know what to do, and planning ahead mentally is a good idea.
