I had bought some turkey bacon because I thought it was more healthy. But when I compared the #;s on the package, the turkey bacon was for 1 slice and the other bacon was for 2 slices. There was not much difference at all . In fact the chol. was higher with the turkey bacon. What is a person to eat? Also I buy the turkey hot dogs. I don't really know how they measure up against the others. We really don't eat many hot dogs though.

PORK ALL THE WAY!!!! yes the turkey is lower in saturated fat, but common, how the heck do they turn turkey into bacon!? that has got to take some super processeing!!! and they are the same number of calories, i will take natural fat over that processed stuff anyday, and god pig bacon is amazingly yummy, turkey bacon is eh. 2 peices of regular pig bacon only has 70 calories, thats the same as one egg.
*no offense to people that eat turkey bacon*0 -
how does the sodium measure up? I hear turkey bacon is high!0
-
Stick with the real stuff!! Just read the ingredient list....turkey bacon has lots of other stuff while pork bacon is, well, just pork. There are some things where there is just no substitute for the real thing and bacon is one of them.0

Yus I would stick with prok (altho neither are a good choice IMO)
The turkey bacon is extremely over processed
But have you tried meatless bacon? i think its yummy!0 -
I think the sodium is around 350, as the turkey weiners are also I think. Well, that's why I like asking questions . I thought I was doing good until I realized the 1 slice instead of 2. I won't be buying any more.
But now another question. I have been using the turkey instead of hamburger meat. That is good isn't it??0 -
definately turkey all the way, its leaner, and the variations of dishes is endless!!0

tURKEY BACON SOUNDS WEIRD0

I would have thought turkey bacon was better, but what you all are saying is so true. Where do they GET the turkey bacon, hmmmmm
Tureky meet is better than beef for other stuff tho.
How you have meatless bacon and where do you get it?0 -

the ground beef I buy (fit and active) has the exact same stats as the ground turkey, but the beef is cheaper and I like it better. but it really depends on the specific hamburger and turkey you buy the calorie and fat counts are all over the place..one turkey switch I DO do is smoked turkey sausage, the difference in cals and fat was quite dramatic...comparing lables is key!0 -
I've been noticing a lot lately that turkey isn't a great substitute. I calculated a recipe I usually make with 96/4 ground chuck but put in 93/7 (the leanest I could find) turkey breast and it was considerably higher in calories!
I've read about what goes into turkey bacon and I refuse to touch it. Have 2 pieces of regular pork bacon and call it a day. Natural and less processed is always better than over processed, formed into a shape meat product.0 -
Eat regular pork bacon. Just don't eat so much of it. That's what I say. Turkey bacon is * weird*. It smells weird. It tastes weird. It looks weird. You don't have to be a weird hippy, food conspiracy theorist to be suspicious of it...your gut just goes....what is this stuff?
As for hot dogs...all of it is heavily processed. Probably turkey and pork are pretty much the same. Probably "higher quality" brands are better, but the kind of animal itself? Eh. Probably doesn't matter much.0 -
Have you tried the low sodium bacon? I don't care for the turkey stuff. And I have issues with sodium as well. So IF I absolutely have to have some bacon.....which my husband loves & cooks often....then I'd rather have the real stuff. I just most often stay away from anything salty.....not that I don't like those foods, but they don't like me. :-(0
-
Both are not great for you. But I would get a leaner cut of regular ol' bacon. You can get the lower fat kind. Not as much sodium and probably the same amount of fat.0
-
Turkey bacon isn't any better. I think pork bacon taste better; and I'm not 100% sure what that turkey bacon has in it, but it's more expensive and that sucks. Two pieces of pork bacon is all the body needs.0

Buy the nitrate-free pork bacon with no additives...better than the chemical filled turkey bacon.0
-
The real thing is almost always better than the fake. Started with margarine, and it goes on. Marketing, marketing, marketing . . .0

pork all the way smoked not salt cured. If you fancy a good healthy alternative try ostrich. We have an ostrich farmer near us the meat is so healthy, lower fat than beef pork chicken and turkey and lower calories than them all lower cholesterol than them all and full of good nutrients0

I am sorry but my butteryball turkey bacon is better than the pork stuff hands down, turkey is the healthier meat as well, for 4 slices its 140 cals and they do not shrink up like the pork ones that are 90% fatty meat, with the turkey bacon you are getting meat and not fat. The only pork bacon I will eat is stuff from the local farmer because its not nearly as fat or salt laden as the store bought stuff.0

Uncured Pork bacon is much healthier than turkey bacon. Another one of the fallacies the Low fat pushers try to tell everyone.
I would only buy fresh made, nitrate free hot dogs also and make sure they are 100% beef.0 -

Turkey bacon is a much more processed food than pork bacon, especially when comparing it to uncured pork bacon.0 -
I buy from a local farm which is all organic and get their nitrate free smoked bacon. It is on my diary for todays breakfast if you want to look at the numbers. I have decided to stick with the real things and eat it as close as possible to "real" I don't eat a lot of bacon so the package will do me well over a month since I only have 2 slices a week max. I freeze it in 2 slice packages then unthaw what I want.0

This is what I do also. Except we eat it everyday, so we could through at least 2 or 3 pounds of bacon a week.
I also filter the grease and use it for cooking vegetables, eggs, etc to keep my fat intake where I need it to be.0 -
Here I thought I was eating more healthy , but sounds like I've learned something today. That's why I love these message boards. thanks everyone....0

I dont like "fat" off real pork bacon so i am a turkey bacon type of gal! Less fatty to me, and i dont mind the taste0

I don't eat pork but I occasionally have the turkey bacon. I get the jennie-o extra lean and it is 20 calories a slice, 120 mg sodium, 1 gram fat, 3 grams protein. I think it's pretty tasty. I'm sure it's full of nitrates (bad news) and so is regular pork bacon. I only have a couple slices every few weeks....0

I would just skip out on bacon completely lol.
As I love to cook, that can be difficult..meaning sometimes it's nice to dice very finely to saute for a base to something, but I try to avoid it or only add ONE slice or two to an entire recipe. I do not eat it as an accompaniment for breakfast..at least I will not anymore haha0 -
i eat center cut bacon (oscar meyer)... 3 slices is 4.5 grams of fat and 70 calories total... i love it!0
-
I just dont eat it all all anymore less its in my once a month cheat meal ........ im a sad panda thou without my pork0
