OK, I HATE RUNNING, BUT I CONSTANTLY HEAR THAT IT IS THE BEST WAY TO DROP POUNDS AT A FASTER RATE. I AM OBVIOUSLY A RESULTS "NOW" PERSON. I AM HAVING A HARD TIME KEEPING MOTIVATED TO DO RUNNING. I AM NOT A BIG FAN OF THE ELLIPTICAL EITHER, I DON'T KNOW ABOUT ANYONE ELSE, BUT DO YOUR FEET FALL ASLEEP TOO?
I HAVE THEN BEEN TOLD NOT TO START WEIGHTS UNTIL I HAVE LOST MOST OF THE FAT I WANT OFF TO TONE THEN. I HAVE A HARD TIME BELIEVING THAT, BUT MY SISTER-IN-LAW LOST 70 PONDS DOING JUST THAT, RUNNING AND NO WEIGHTS. I AM GETTING REALLY FRUSTRATED. MY DOCTOR JUST FILLED A RX FOR ADIPEX, WHICH IS AN APPETITE SUPPRESENT. I AM HOPING THAT WILL HELP WITH MY BAD GRAZING.
I WOULD JUST LIKE SOME GREAT IDEAS ON HOW TO MAXIMIZE MY ONE HOUR OF WORKING OUT.

In the summer I just work with horses all day, which I love. However, in the winter I have to do more and I try to find a mixture of work out video that offer cario and toning. Also I know quite a few people how have lost weight by lifting weights and little cardio, because muscles take more calories to support.

Hope you find something you like. I hate running too. good Luck

    Muscle helps burn fat.
Cardio (of ANY type at a deccent intensity) will burn off fat.
Grazing is not bad, grazing on junk is.
  • if you have a gym membership, a good aerobics or pilates class can actually burn more calories than running. It helps also to keep you from getting burned out from running all the time :-)

I spent about $700 for an elliptical that is now in my bedroom collecting dust and laundry.
I can only go for about 10 to 15 minutes and then my feet fall asleep.
I thought I hated running to but now I am ADDICTED. I shouldn't say I run....I jog. I started slow with the Couch to 5K running program at www.coolrunning.com. Before completing this program I had never jogged more than the mile they made us do in high school....and even then I walked most of it. Now I run/jog 3 miles a day and love every minute of it.

Honey, the best way to maximize any workout is to love it! I hate running, too, because at 5500 feet above sealevel, there is no breathing!! And yes, my feet fall asleep on the elliptical too!

I say grab your iPod, walkmen, whatever you have, pop some awesome tunes in it and go! Walking for one hour at 3 mph, with intervals of 3.5 and higher as well as hills, will burn a ton of calories. Also, cardio kickboxing is fabulous.

May I inquire who told you to lay off the weights? If you build muscle while burning fat, you'll see better results sooner. It will also help make your cardio more effective because you will have muscle to push through platues!

But don't limit yourself to machines. try everything! Those truely fit and hot people you see out there? They most likely play a sport or do yoga and dance and lifting and......it can go on forever!!

The best 2 ways to stick to working out is to keep from getting bored AND seeing results. You'll see results faster if you start toning your muscles!

  • I've been doing the Jillian Michaels 30 day shred. I like it because it's only 20 minutes and I can tell from the way I'm panting and sweating that it's working. I also walk for 30 minutes a day. I've only been doing this combined for a few days and I'm already noticing a difference in my legs and thighs, plus with the way that I feel.
  • THANKS ALL!
MY STUPID BROTHER-IN-LAW TOLD ME NOT TO LIFT BECAUSE I WOULD "BULK" UP AND NOT SLIM DOWN. WHICH FREAKED ME OUT, BECAUSE WITH MY BODY TYPE I INHERITED FROM MY DAD, I AM SHORT AND STALKY. I OBVIOUSLY DO NOT WANT TO BULK UP. BUT THEN THE DOCTORS I WORK WITH SAID THE SAME THING, MUSCLE BURNS MORE THAN FAT.
    :grumble:
I DO GO TO A GYM AND I HAVE TONS OF OPTIONS. I DO NOT KNOW HOW I LIVED BEFORE THE IPOD!

Hun, I am built like a short little linebacker.
You can still lose weight and work with weights.
Like the others said, helps with tone and increasing muscle mass helps burn more.
You don't have to use HEAVY weights, there is a key.
Lots of trainers say lighter weights high reps for more toneing.
Heavier weights less reps for more muscle bulk.

There are other types of cardio...Step class or other areobics, kickboxing (as Fab140 mentioned), spinning...these are great calorie burners. And weights will not inhibit your loss. You main initially gain a few pounds because muscle is more dense than fat, however, weights will sculpt your body. Cardio alone can lower the numbers on the scale, but you will be cardio skinny...not so much muscle definition. I guess it depends on what you are looking for. Me...I want to sculpt my entire body. Here's my weekly workout plan:

Mon--1/2 hour run on the treadmill, 1 hour BodyPump class (it's a weight lifting class that works ALL your muscle groups...it's AWESOME!)

Tues--45 minute Step class and 15 minute Ab workout

Wed--1/2 hour run on the treadmill, 1 hour BodyPump class

Thurs--45 minute Step class and 15 minute Ab workout

Fri--1 hour of either incline intervals on the treadmill or elliptical

    Sat--1 hour Spinning class

Sun--Off, but usually a 1/2 hour walk with the dogs plus cleaning the house and laundry

This schedule seems to work well for me. Good luck!

Exactly. Whoever told women not to lift, especially free weights, needs to be shot. You won't bulk up unless you start lifting heavy amounts and really focusing on bulking up. You gain strength and stability with lifting, especially with free weights. The women you see in the fitness mags that look like GI Jane?? They have been on a strict regimne and strict diet specifically for that.

    So no worries!!

I tore a muscle in my back on the elliptical machine and will never ever use it again, they work well for some people but most of them are built for people of a certain stature and obviously i'm not that stature lol.

I swim, I love swimming and it burns more calories for my weight and weight loss range than anything else. I picked swimming because I enjoy it so much, enjoying a workout means you look forward to it which is extremely important in getting motivated!

I hate to run because of the impact of it on my body and I find swimming to be a lot lower impact but just as much benefit, I swim 2-3 times a week for an hour each time (laps). I also do yoga every day but it's more physical therapy yoga for my back since I have back problems, but I enjoy it because of the relief I feel after doing it!

I'm with you...I HATE running too, so I only do it once a week and only for 30 minutes. I try to do activites that I like (especially cycling) because I know that I will stick to an activity that I like.

As far as no weights until you've lost weight, my personal trainer says that that is the biggest fitness lie out there. Muscle burns more calories than fat, so if you want to burn fat, you've got to build muscle. I do strength training 3 times per week with my trainer, and he always mixes cardio in with the weights to maximize the burn. Not only does the muscle help to burn fat, but the toning changes your body very quickly. I've only ost 26 pounds, but I've already lost 7 inches off of my waist and about 4 dress sizes.

This is the workout plan that I have been following...
Mondays - 1 hour workout with personal trainer followed by 30 minutes on the stair climber
Tuedays - 1 hour of cardio (whatever I feel like for the day)
Wednesdays - 1 hour workout with personal trainer followed by 1 hour cycling class (my big burnout day!)
    Thursdays - REST DAY!
Fridays - 1 hour workout with personal trainer followed by 30 minutes of running on the treadmill
Saturdays - 1 hour cycling class
Sundays - 5 mile hike on local nature trail (low impact, but still a tough workout because of the hills on the terrain)

Hokay...I HATE....ed.... Running. Ya know what I hate more than running??? Ready for this??? Muffin top. But running has been one of the fastest contributor to my slim down. Seriously...

I would have never have posted this "beefore." This is from mostly running~~~~> m_359275cf702af8731c0ab15618788704.jpg

So maybe try it. Make small goals. Try to get outside and run halfway down the street without hating it. Then work on trying to run down the full street without swearing about it. Then run down the street and back and smile. Then run down the street and back and start believing it!

I add biking, swimming, rip sticking, walking, jump roping, canoeing, kayaking, water aerobics, swimming, and anything someone suggests to my running so I don't get bored with working out.

Would doing something like that help you?

I hate the elliptical, and yes, my feet fall asleep. I hate most of the machines at the gym. Mix it up! MWF I do crosstraining--30 min cardio, 30 min strength training. You SHOULD do strength training, no matter where you are. It's good for maintaining (and building a little) muscle while you're dropping fat. Your weight may not change as quickly, but your body will. Muscle is denser than fat--and toning certain areas will give you the appearance of looking thinner. It's also just good for things like posture--which also helps you look slimmer. Just make sure to start at a level that is challenging, but not impossible!

For cardio, since I hate the machines, I do 10 min biking, 10 min stairstepper, and 10 min elliptical. I don't get bored as often if I only have to do it for 10 min. You may look into a few personal training sessions to get started--just to give you some ideas.

I definitely agree with what people are saying though...try out a bunch of stuff (classes, training, other forms of exercise...). You'll do a lot better once you find something active you enjoy doing! I love being outdoors, so running is good for me, as well as winter sports. I also love volleyball, so I try to find some time to go play, or at least pepper with a friend. Find what you like!
  • Spinning/Cycling is the BEST most FUN workout. Find an instructor that you like that plays the kind of music you like. My heartrate monitor says I burn between 550 and 800 calories in a 45 minute class depending on how hard I push myself and the instructor. I would STRONGLY recommend this.

As for weight training - yes, muscles burns more than fat. However, everyone's body is different. I find that when I am regularly taking spinning classes, I do not need to do extra weights on my legs because it will just bulk them up. I think you should try lighter weights and more repetitions to add muscle and tone, rather than bulk.

    Good luck!

PS My feet also fall asleep on the elliptical - I'm glad I'm not the only one :)

:explode: Lifting won't make you bulky! Even lifting HEAVY won't...in fact, lifting heavy especially won't because it doesn't cause lactic acid build up which promotes GH release to make your muscles grow like high rep work does. Feel the burn? It's lactic acid, and it promotes muscle growth with little gains in strength. Reach failure after 6 reps? No lactic acid, minimal muscle growth, huge strength gains. I lift no more than 10 reps, and stick more with 6-8, and how bulky am I? No woman should be afraid to lift weights. Whoever says not to needs to get the memo that we're not living in the 40's anymore. :grumble:

My feet definitely fall asleep on the elliptical, so I only stick with one machine for about 20 minutes. I do 10-15 minutes of interval training on the stairstepper, 10-20 minutes on the elliptical, 10-20 minutes of spinning, and then cool down for 5 minutes on the bike to finish. I hate running when I first begin just because it's tough, but I get into it once I can maintain my speed for about 30 min+.
  • the people I train I have them lifting weights from day one. train hard it will pay off
  • I heard that the reason why your feet fall asleep is because you don't lift and move the postion of it. IDK i have never tried one. But that is what I have heard. I could be wrong. Just lift your feet off the machine every once in awhile.

As far as the workouts go I mix mine up every week.
    1 week
    3days Turbo Jam
    3days Treadmill
    one day rest
    2nd week
    3 days HHA
    3 days treadmill
    one day rest
    3rd week
    3 days tae bo
    3 days pilaties
    one day rest

I will mix it up alittle if I am feeling the need..
Don't be afraid to do more than one workout at a time...
If you do the same thing all the time your body gets used to it...
    Hope this helps.

i couldnt have said it better, swimming is great (just back from the pool actualy)
i swimming 4 hours total a week. i do laps, mostly crawl but some breatstrokes as well,
it is known to be the best exercise out there, low impact, uses more muscles then any other cardio machine, the only problem i have with it is the chlorine in the water (makes me weezy, and not too sure of the long term effect on my health)

ho and,,,,,,,,, swmming makes for very nice male bodies
and that makes for a very good motivation

I started off very slow. I used the Couch to 5K plan from www.coolrunning.com. It starts you off very slow, it mixes walking and running, gradually increases the amount of time you run. My mother who is 56 years old did it with me. She had never run for any amount of time in her life and now she is running three miles a day with me.

    The Couch-to-5K Running Plan
Our beginner's running schedule has helped thousands of new runners get off the couch and onto the roads, running 3 miles in just two months.
