Are Canes Sexy?

I'm about to go the grocery store..rice cakes, check, bananas for protein shakes, check...Cane?
I started the C25k a couple of weeks ago and I dearly miss doing it. I haven't been able to jog in a few days. I've been walking instead..which I hate.
My knee is screaming to be released from servitude! I am in a decent amount of pain. I think- it's um some part of my knee that is connective tissue, that's all I can describe it as.
What I'm asking is this: is going to the doctor even worthwhile? I say this b/c I don't think they can even do anything for it. I don't really relish the idea of sliding around on my stomach with my arms a la The Ring style to get my exercise.
Thoughts?

You should pursue this with a doctor. It may be just strained and not damaged. Or, if you have a tear it needs to be repaired. It won't go away on its own.
If you want to keep working out, but give your knee a rest, get access to a pool and workout in water. It will take your body weight off your knee while you exercise. And the resistance the water provides makes the workout just as good, if not better. But yeah, definitely get it checked and heal it. You have babies to chase!!0 -
if its in side your knee sounds like your cartilage might be in flamed.
keep weight off it and keep it raised.
If carries on for more than 3 days with out the pain dropping then see a doc. you might have to have a small op and have it out. or try lower impact training, cross trainers etc
Doctor Kettlewell will post you the bill0 -

I so hope you are wrong! That's like asking J Lo to let her doc slice a bit on her rear end. My sexy legs are - well one of my favorite body parts. /weeping0 -
I personally never had much luck with going to a doctor, but it certainly won't make it worse.
I hurt my knee badly a few years ago at work, and wearing a OTC knee brace helped a lot. It gave my knee more support, but I think the biggest benefit was that it limited my range of motion so I didn't screw it up even worse. Same thing when I sprained my wrist... wearing the brace made me remember not to use that hand. Otherwise, I'd grab a 40# bucket of kitty litter and not realize until it was in mid-air, "Hey... this HURTS!"
EDIT to ADD: Dr. House's flaming cane is kinda hot.0 -
you need to go to the doctors you could have torn a ligament, you must not ignore it or you could end up with permanent damage. i have osteo arthritis in most of my joints . i used to ignore it and think its just because i am fat i am losing weight it wil get better it didnt it got worse! if i had got it diagnosed properly it would not have stopped the condition but if i was properly medicated it could have slowed the degeneration0

I did C5k and "the running room" learn to run; at different times, had knee pain both times, dibilitating couldn't even do stairs without pain. My doc refered me to physio and they pin pointed exactly what the issue was. A soft tissue injury due to a couple of things, not stretching prior to the activity, quads, ham's, hip/butt, and calf all pulling while running caused the knee injury. I also had to get inserts, due to poor arch support/flat feet. Physio got me back on track, pain free. A physiothearapist should be able to pin point the cause of the pain for you. My doctor said they have better speciality training regarding the overall body (tissues/muscle etc) than he did. Maybe give that a try?0

I once found a web site that listed the various symptoms of various knee issues. This *might* have been it - http://www.time-to-run.com/injuries/thebig5/index.htm (it's the best I can find at the moment).
You're wise not to run on it if it's hurting. I made that mistake a while back when I had "IT Band syndrome" and put my knee out of commission for months.
If it's hurting for more than a few days, or if it doesn't hurt in general but chronically starts hurting shorting after starting a run, then yeah, you probably should see a doc. They could hopefully diagnose it better than the interwebs and potentially find a quicker/better way to recover from it.0 -
I just needed some opinions because I'm kind of skeptical about a doctor being able to 'fix' any soft tissue internal knee thingy. I know- it's just plain stupid of me. But I thought this would, given some rest, go away.
What's funny is that I reorganized my pantry today and sorted through all of the medications and..got rid of all of my Percoset and Vicodin..I could use a few LOL.0 -
personally id go to the doctor - even if it is just for peace of mind..
this time last year i was walking up a ramp and my right knee buckled under me.. i didnt think i had done anything serious and kept on walking on it til it was the size of a melon and i couldnt even touch it cause it hurt so bad.. went to the docs and she said id just bruised it but sent me to the hospital for an xray just to check, turns out id torn all the ligaments and tendons around the knee and at the same time id done some minor damage to the cartilidge as well.. after 3weeks of resting it it was about 5/6 months before it felt totally better - but then i had lost around 14lbs during that time so that probably helped a tad!
i know it sounds pretty dramatic but i wish i had gone to the doctors the day it happened as i probably had made it much worse by still being active on it..0 -

You do need to get it checked. you cant carry on and do more damage

If you find the right dr it's always worthwhile. But if you're like me - I leave there feeling even worse than I got there. When I had knee pain, it took me 3-4 dr to find one that didn't want to just operate. The first didn't even ask what Knee it was and wanted to order an expensive MRI. Long story short, it was a muscle imbalance causing my knee caps to pull off center, called Jumper's Knee. I was also told it was the meniscus. I'm very anti traditional medicine, oh the stories I could tell.
If you want to avoid the Dr - I'd say say off your running until the pain goes away. Do Yoga, and Cross training to keep your muscles in good shape. Research Jumper's Knee and IT Band issues, these are common among runners. I know you will normally be told Meniscus doesn't heal on it's own, but there are ways, I've done it, however it takes a long slow process.
Don't just take the first Dr.s advise as gospel either. Try all options, a general MD, and Orthopod, a Podiatrist (Yes feet dr knows knees too) and even a Chiro. Research Research Research.0 -
You might want to look up some knee rehab and stretching exercises to see if any of those help. When my knee hurts, that's all I can do, really, and a trip to the doctor is just to pay him to say, "try these exercises." Of course, it's important to go at least once and make sure it's not too serious. Plus, if he can give you a referral to a physical therapist and your insurance covers that, it's awesome.
Other than that, it could just be the running. I used to run. I thought it was something I "had" to do (well, I did have to when I was in the Army), and walking sucked. After the fourth time I re-broke my foot (and those two years I spent in a wheelchair), I decided walking, the elliptical, and some other things were pretty okay. I have weak bones in my foot due to some weird genetic thingy (but no one knew until I broke my foot and it wouldn't heal and then re-broke it and it healed wrong), plus one of my legs is really shorter than the other (most people's aren't symmetrical, but mine are apparently WAY off). A lot of people get injured pounding the pavement and pushing themselves to run. I think some of us just weren't born to run. Besides, I lose more weight by walking and swimming so no big deal. Good luck and get better!0
