I am currently TTC. My question is I am currently "budgeted" to consume 1200 calories a day to lose an average of 1 pound a week. Once I am pregant I have read that you should consume 300 calories more per day. However this is based on regular diet (not trying to lose) Should I just consume 1500 calories a day?

I know pregnancy is a touchy issue, and you have to be careful what you do because of the baby. I would check with your doctor. He/she would know best.

    Good luck! :)

According to my doctor, the minimum amount of calories a pregnant woman needs is 1800.
  • I am pregnant currently. Once you are pregnant, "dieting" goes out the window. It's not a free for all to eat anything, you still need to be eating healthy. You just need to slightly increase by the 300 calories a day.

To be honest, at 7 weeks I am finding this difficult w/ the constant queasiness & smell issues. Two meals a day is plenty w/ a snack or two right now but everyone is different.

The best bet would be for you to speak to a doctor now while your TTC & start taking a prenatal now.
  • I would think that it's based on a regular diet too..... If I were you... I would start @1600 - 1800 calories and see how that works out. Talk to your doctor too... You definitely don't want to lose the weight that fast if you are pregnant.... Good luck...

I would consult a doctor on that one when youre pregnant. I know they determine how much you should gain by your current weight so they will be very clear with how much to eat and of what :)

    Best of luck to you!!!
  • when I had my little boy last year, I was told I needed to stick to at least 2000 calories per day in order to keep myself & my baby healthy.... The average healthy weight gain during pregnancy is 28-35 lbs. Make sure you're taking your pre-natal vitamins & get your iron levels checked too....
My Dr always suggests that you have a pre-conception check-up appointment where you can discuss things like this & you can get a once over to make sure you're otherwise healthy before getting pregnant to optimise the chances of a healthy, happy pregnancy too. Good Luck TTC!

thanks everyone. I am going to see this month what happens :) Fingers crossed and then either way make an appointment with the doctor. I really just wish I would have lost this 15 pounds months ago...oh well. My goal and normal weight is 135. I am currently at 148...due to vacation, wedding, honeymoon, christmas blah blah blah... But I think if I can watch a little with out going crazy during the pregancy (if and when it happens) I should get it back under control.

I do plan on the continued workouts also, again not crazy sessions but still my 3-4 days a week.

First, I would talk to your doctor.

Second, do NOT diet when pregnant. Eat healthy and reasonably. At the early stages of pregnancy, you really don't need to eat an extra 300 cals. It doesn't take that much energy then.

It's definitely not an excuse to eat whatever, either. I sometimes think women use it as an excuse to cut loose and enjoy themselves after watching what they eat a lot of their lives. Then, later, they come to regret it.

Just eat as healthfully as possible, like you would for a healthy lifestyle. That's the best thing you can do for both yourself and the life you are growing.

    Good luck!
