Sugar

I hope someone can help me with an explanation of sugar in my diet. According to the plan I should only be taking in 44 grams of sugar. Well I exceeded that just with breakfast alone. No donuts or sugar food, just two small glasses of 2% milk and 2 serving of frozen blueberries. Now I understand that eating cookies, soda, candy, etc is where alot of the sugar is , but if I am not eating the bad stuff, should I not worry about the sugar total I am seeing?

PS I usually drink skim milk, but I need the extra calories because I am not coming close to the amount I am supposed to take in.

Unfortunately MFP doesn't differentiate between added and refined sugars and those found naturally in certail foods like milk and fruit. I wouldn't worry if your sugar is coming from natural sources.
  • Idon't worry about it.
  • Sugar adds to weight gain unnecessarily. When I did a diet to get rid of candida (excess yeast), the only sugar allowed was from green apples. I know this is extreme, but to avoid sugar as much as possible (even from fruit, in my opinion), will only help you in the long run. I'm not saying never eat fruit, but definitely stay away from refined sugar. You'll get to your goal more quickly. Plus, sugar lowers our immune system, too. I read today that 75% of our body is based on what we eat. This is a great place--MFP-- as we just keep track of what goes in our mouth. (Half the battle) :) Keep up the good fight!

I agree there is a difference between eating sugar from a fruit or other natural source and having a Snickers bar. On mornings when I have a waffle with raw honey and half a banana I blow through my sugar total for the day. I choose to ignore that but I do take note when I realize that I have had dessert or a lot of refined sugar more than a couple days of a week.
MFP should be a guide to help you, but not be the end all be all of your diet.
