How many of you actually use the MFP calories burned totals when entering your daily exercise?? I know without a HRM you won't know an "exact" number but I feel that the machine totals are too high most of the time but there are also times I feel machines are pretty low. I always enter my weight and age into the machine (not that I know if it helps the accuracy) when I begin my workout. Thoughts please...

i don't have the money for a HRM right now, so I use the MFP calorie burn totals. Not sure exactly how accurate they are. Hoping to save up to get a HRM kinda soon.
  • Honestly? I just use the values MFP gives me unless there's a really big discrepancy between what my treadmill says and what the value is. For instance, I'll add more calories burned if I'm walking at a 12% incline, even though MFP does have a walking uphill option.

I'll usually use the machine to calculate and then when I get home I compare it with what MFP calculates, they are usually fairly close, so I just use what it says because it's not usually outrageous numbers.

The only time I don't really like the MFP calculations is when I do a class, like step or kickboxing. I did kickboxing last week, a 60 minute class, and when I entered it it told me I burned 1100 calories! I'm sure I burned a lot, but yikes, I don't know about that much! So what I usually do with my classes is deduct off the time we spent doing a warm up, cool down, and abs session, which is about 15 minutes, and I think it gives me a more accurate number. I don't know for sure because I don't have a HRM, but I used to have the bodybugg, so I have an idea of how many calories I usually burn in a class to use as a guide.

I don't have an HRM so I enter my workouts into Runkeeper online because it calculates based on time spent and distance run. As long as MFP's calculations are close to that number, I'm ok with it. If it's way off, I'll enter manually based on Runkeeper's numbers.

MFP tends to estimate really high. I burn about 5-8 cals/minute, dependant on my effort. MFP usually gives me 10-15.
