Such a big discrepancy on "nuts"

So I know nuts should be consumed in small amounts because of the high calories they have. I buy mine at a whole food store and the bag of almonds I have says about 160 calories for about 8 almonds. But then as I'm looking through other people's diaries.....I see they have blue diamond almonds and are logging in under 100 calories for about 30 almonds. What's the deal?

Are blue diamonds canned almonds really better than the ones I'm buying :-(

No way is 30 almonds only 100 calories. One ounce is around 160 calories.

I buy Planter's nut-rition (southbeach diet mix) large bag from Sam's club and it states that 21 pieces are 170 calories (pieces not nuts.) However, when I get the same item from Walmart in a smaller container it states that 18 pieces are 170 calories. Same exact product in different packages with different information. I have been logging the 21 nuts as 170 and maybe have been going over in nut calories.

This is just another example of the need to weigh things. Counting 8 almonds will give you different actual calories depending on how big the almonds are. Small one will give you less than large ones. A good quality kitchen scale is a great investment in helping portion control.

Great idea. Both packages do say that an ounce is 170 calories, however the amount to equal an ounce varies. I will weigh my nuts from now on. duh!

lol the main thing is to get the almonds in they are a great food and can help control appetite. I have a small mix of almonds, peanuts and punpkin seeds (all from bulk barn) I mix it in a big bag then shake it up real good and throw a handful into a baggie and take with me to work as a snack.

I've found there are numerous strange discrepencies in calorie values in the database. I wish the moderators would pull out the bad listings. I suspect people find the listing with the numbers they like and use that one, so that's why you see the low number so often. The Blue Diamond can in front of me says: Serving size 1 ounce (28g/about 28 nuts) Calories 160. Lower than your brand, but definitely not as low as the listings.

I have a thing of blue diamond almonds right here- whole unsalted and 28 are 160 calories. They seem pretty average in size.

do they have a weight on there? generic almonds unsalted on mfp says 8 cal/almond so that 224 cal according to mfp. They must be smaller sized.

looking at Blue Diamond Wasabi nuts (for Binary, yes they are hot nuts) 1 oz (about 28 nuts) is 170 cal. other cans I have look at say roughly the same thing.

I had to quit eating cocktail peanuts because I can't stop eating them and an ounce (about 35 peanuts) is 170 cals. I could eat the entire can!

Blue Diamond have a 100 calorie pack but it's NOT EVEN close to 30 almonds. it's probably about 8.
