I know it may sound silly but I'm sure what I really can and can't do to get good results. Now i'm not looking to drop 66lbs in 3 months, but I'd like a steady 2lbs a week. Do I just have to stay below my calories for the day? Can I honestly have two pieces of cheese pizza on Thursday and cake on Saturday if I watch my calories???? Or do I have to save the those for a treat once or twice a month and stick to the salad and chicken? Yes, I am working out, four days a week.

Here is the thing, when I eat certain foods (especially sweets) it really throws me off the next couple of days. It messes with my system.

i'd say you're ok to have those treats on the days you mentioned. you're working out and do plan on staying under your calories. you may notice a "gain" on the scale the next day but it's not going to be actual fat gain. I'd also recommend if you're just starting out to pick a day or two out of the week as official weigh in days. and weigh in the morning before breakfast and after going to the bathroom.

I just re-read your post. 66 pounds in 3 months?! That is 5 1/2 pounds A WEEK in 12 weeks.

No, you cannot eat those foods and lose 66 pounds in 3 months or 5 months. You have to make a lifestyle change to eat healthy and treat your body right. If you eat good healthy calories, you will feel better and feel fuller and have less cravings.

people will be quite mixed on this...some say cut out the bad stuff altogether...but i have an occassional couple of pieces of pizza, or a choccy treat...just make sure you stick to your calorie amount that you're alloted and you should still be fine

you need to eat the calorie amount that mfp sets you..or if it's quite a high amount you're alloted NO LESS THAN 1200calories

I think that was said as a hyperbole....The writer said he/she is "NOT looking to lose 66 lbs. in 3 months".... (Thank GOD, how unhealthy would THAT be...Unless of course he/she went to the Biggest Loser campus. I can't BELIEVE the numbers those contestants drop each week!!!)

I wouldn't rule anything out at all, I avoid the nasty stuff half the time because it just doesn't fill you for the calories it has. Like I went for a pub meal tonight, 1000 cal meal and there was nothing there!!... so for me its the fact you just don't get that much bad food for your money so to speak.

What your saying in my opinion is fine, its in moderation and its not every day, if you cut out something altogether that you like then you just end up wanting it more.

I just eat what I want. I lay off the greasy, fried stuff...onion rings are for special occasions only. I just watch serving sizes, etc, and I am losing at a pace I am content with.
  • I cannot tell you from experience, only what I’ve read from people who have successfully lost weight and shared their advice on this site… you can eat poor quality foods (high fat, high sugar, heavily processed) and lose weight as long as you maintain your calorie deficit. That will work…for a while. But you will hit a plateau and hit it hard and you may even continue to gain. And it will not be until you are eating balanced meals with wholesome, nutritious foods that you will be able to lose the remainder of your weight. The more you have to lose, the longer you can get away with losing weight by calorie deficit alone. But as a longterm weight-loss solution, it will backfire.
  • I think its ok to indulge every once in a while, but do not go crazy. It is proven (and forgive me for not posting an article to back myself up, don't have time to look for one but its out there) but those who completely cut out sweets and junk have a higher tendency to binge on them than those that allow the occasional indulgence. (like a piece of cake 1 time every week or two). I would set a day, like Saturday, to allow yourself to be rewarded for your hard work. Don't go crazy and eat a piece of cake, a sundae, bag of candy, AND a bag of chips. Choose one item and one item only. And if it helps you to feel less guilty about it commit to do 10 extra minutes of working out on that day to make up for it. Bottom line, you need to let yourself enjoy life and the sweet stuff, but do it with common sense. If you constantly deprive yourself then you'll resent your lifestyle change and fall off the wagon. Just be smart - bottom line for anything :)

I follow the Primal Blueprint and its really helped me out. You can google it for more info but basically you eat what primal man/woman had available to them. So basically its low carb. I don't eat any bread, pasta, etc. But the trick is you get 1 day off a week, mine is Saturday. I eat good all week then I eat junk on Saturday. If you follow this plan and stay under your calorie goal to lose the weight but splurge on 1 day only you will find you may have more willpower to make it the rest of the time.

It works for me and my fiancée but not everyone is the same. I have also been exercising more as well but the fiancée has not and just stuck to the diet plan and has dropped a good amount of weight. Another book about a low carb life is Why We Get Fat: And What to Do About It . I heard about it from Paul Thruott who does a geeky podcast.

 I agreed! Even the Cleanest Eaters I know have an indulgence every now and then. I have to be careful a piece of cake doesn't turn into a feeding frenzy the next day. I tend to pace the house looking for food even though I know I shouldn't be hungry.
