Hot Yoga

I recently started doing hot yoga, I sweat my butt off but is it equivalent to running? I heard you burn 600-1000 cals per class but that range is too large for me to really know what I am burning. Has anyone done hot yoga and thinks it would be a good way to loose weight? THANKS

Never heard of "hot yoga" but I heard of 'power yoga." Didn't know you can burn that many calories. If it helps burn the fat off your butt I would be interested in trying since I can't run anymore due to arthritis in knees.0

Hot yoga is an amazing way to lose weight! Just be consistent in going, and patient, and you'll definitely see results. I'm not sure how many calories you'll burn - I've heard that in Bikram yoga, you can burn up to 1000, but maybe you could just pick a random number in between 600-1000 as a guideline.
Good luck!!! :flowerforyou:0 -

It is yoga in a room that is about 100 degrees... seems like it would be great for arthritis! i was drenched in sweat when i left but very relaxed.0

I usually log between 500 to 600 calories depending on how many poses I sit out on any given day. It really gets your heart pumping, I love it! And, I KNOW I've burned that many calories because I am starving ALL day when I go to yoga. My body burns the calories and is begging to be refueled! :laugh:0

I found a website where i put in my weight, at the time 135lb, in 1 hour it said i burned 600 calories. but for mfp I just log it as 300cal. better to underestimate for exercise. If you guys could give that feedback to mfp to add hot yoga that would be awesome. From time to time I send them a plea to add it but it's still not included. Maybe if enough people ask for it they will add it??0

I go to a hot yoga class, not bikram, a heated vinyasa.
I pour buckets of sweat and it is both tiring and strenuous, but I just dont feel like I am burning that many calories.0 -
I started going to hot yoga regularly (3-4 times a week) a month ago today. In that month, I have lost 5 pounds and 6 inches. Personally, I think the estimates of a calorie burn of 500-1000 calories are high. Yes, you sweat, but your heart rate is not sustained in that burn range. I am estimating approximately a 300 calorie burn for an hour class.0
