How do I start running?!?!

I've always wanted to try running but it's always been really hard. I've never really been fit and everytime I've tried to run I get winded and out of breath. Sometimes it even hurts. With trying to lose weight a lot of people have told me you burn more calories while running. Which makes sense. I go walking every morning just to get me started. But i need more then that cause my body is starting to get used to it. Any tips or advise to make running easier to turn it into a routine without killing me?!? haha Anything will be a big help. Thanks all!

Try a couch to 5k program. Week 1 is 5 min brisk walk then you alternate between 60 seconds of jogging and 90 seconds of walking, for 20 minutes.
Hope this helps.0 -

Use this plan. I'm currently in the middle of week six. I have over 100 lbs. to lose still. And I've been doing this for six weeks. Last Saturday I ran 2 miles straight and at the beginning I could barely run the minute. I'm burning tons of calories and I'm really loving it. Like loving it like I have my eye on a half marathon here on Thanksgiving!
Also, the best other thing you can do for yourself is get fitted for proper running shoes.0 -
couch 2 5k definitely will help you get started. goodluck! i am working on running my first 5k, if you need any support/help friend me!

I agree with everyone who said C25K! I am in the middle of week 6, like the poster above, and ran 2 miles on Monday and the first week I could barely even run for 60 seconds without feeling like a heart attack was imminent. I have a total of about 98 lbs to lose (currently have 80 lbs left).0

i am not much of a runner myself. What I do though is use a walk run ratio. First week walk for 2 minutes and run for one 10x.
Then increase run times and lower walking. Got this starters tip from runnerworld.com
Good luck0 -
do a google search for couch to 5k or cool runnings. it gives u a running schedule to get u to be able to run a 3.1 mile race in 30 minutes or less. The training is an 8 week 3x a week thing. As soon as I get my treadmill this week I'm starting it and when the weather gets nicer (I'm in NH) i will be running outside!0

I hated hated hated running. In august I started walking and by September it had turned into running. Now I have signed up for my second 10k in March.
When I started I would get tired and winded really fast and the side stitch, oh that darn side stitch. My best thing I figured out was not to focus on speed. Just doing the running motion was enough at first. I think when I started I did a 12:30 mile. However, I was able to run the entire mile without stopping. So my best advice I could give is find the pace that doesn't make you winded, the pace where you can have a conversation and run at that pace. Today run a quarter of a mile then walk a quarter, run a quarter and finish with a walk. Do that for awhile until you want to run half a mile. Just keep moving up at your own comfortable pace, never worry about your speed, that comes naturally. I was running one day and noticed, "Holy HOt Damn!" I now run a 10:30 mile.
Another thing is a goal really helps. I signed up for my first 5k in October. Having that goal made me really work on my running and forced me to give no excuses.
Good luck!0 -
I also started with couch to 5k. I've run 2 marathons and countless other races. The races motivate me to keep running so set a goal for yourself by signing up for a 5k.0

I started 7 weeks ago I've never been able to run and a sport scientist friend wrote me a programme (I actually think she got it from runners world) it takes it a little slower than couch to 5 k.
Week 1= Run 1 minute walk 2, repeat 10 times, do 4 times a week
Week 2 =run 1 minute 30 secs walk 2 times repeat 8 times followed with a 2 minute run. 4 times a week
Week 3= Run 2 minutes walk 2 minutes repeat 8 times. Do 4 times a week
Week 4 =Run 3 minutes walk 2. repeat 6 times. Do 4 times a week.
etc etc
Im in week 7 running 6 minutes walking 2 x4, I've never been able to run in my life its great and the calories it burns is fantastic. The programme take 23 weeks to build up to running half an hour solid, very achievable. If you want it add message me with an e mail/ add as a friend and i'll send it as a spread sheet.0 -
Another thing besides doing the couch 25k which is a great starting program, you will need very good running shoes or you might end up with shin splints! Also a good supportive bra is in order! I tried the C25K on my elliptical last night, works just as well but I am going to try the running thing again eventually! Good luck!0

I have just started the C25K ( i have done day 1 and 2 of week 1) and i am finding it quiet hard to run for a minute, i can manage it but only just. It has lifted my spirit reading that people that could barely run 1 minute in week 1 are now a few weeks in and running over a mile.
I was wondering if it would really work, but based on what i have read, i am now feeling optimistic0 -

I could barely get through a minute and 2 seemed like an eternity, im now doing 6 without a problem and my heart rate/recovery rate has improved sooo much, stick with it, it really works0 -
I would also vote for Couch to 5k! I did it last summer and it really worked. I am still amazed that I went from barely being able to run for 60 seconds straight to essentially being able to run for 60 minutes straight 5-6 months later.0

I can't say enough about C25K! I was never a runner, hated running...even when I played football in high school. I started C25K last fall and it also helped me get off the weight loss plateau and I've lost 37 pounds since then as well as run three 5K's with my next 3 miler in a month. I've also started the Bridge to 10K with hopes of running a 5 miler in May.
If I had not found the C25K program I might still be sitting at home wondering what it would be like to run! I say give it a shot!0 -
this is great ive been thinking alot about running as well and im really trying to start once it gets warm out because i hate the treadmill0

this sounds awesome! One of my goals is to be able to run 2 miles straight. I'm almost there (i usually stop about 2-4 times for 30-60 seconds). I think i could do it but I just get so BORED staying at one pace for more than 10 minutes. Does anyone have any suggestions for that?
I'm going to jump in the C25K at around week 3 or 4 and see what happens. Maybe i'll end up loving running so much I won't get bored!0 -
C25K is amazing!! There is an iphone and blackberry app that is amazing! You can listen to your music and the voice prompts tell you when to run and when to walk. I did C25k and I joined a women's learn to run group and I found C25k much more helpful. And there is a Bridge to 10k app. I started with C25k last year in June and was running half marathons by October! Good luck!!
Just remember, you have good runs and bad runs. Don't let the bad days get you down, it just helps you build up your endurance!
I suggest starting from day 1. I helped coach a friend for learning to run and we didn't start at the beginning and ended up starting from day 1 and ended up wasting 2 weeks of training as he just couldn't get the hang of it. Once we started from day 1 he was way better!0 -
I would stay at a level that I was having difficulty with until I was comfortable with it, do an extra run or 2 or whatever then move on. It just gives you confidence that you CAN do it!!0

Along the same lines of C25k is a lovely book, easy to read... if you prefer having reference material in print. I got a used copy on Amazon. It's called "The Beginning Runner's Handbook" by Ian MacNeill and the Sports Medicine Council of British Columbia.
Thanks to marialy 21 for suggesting the smartphone app! I'm downloading it now!!!0
