If the "starvation mode" idea is no longer then why am I not losing weight? I gained a pound since yesterday but I've been under my calorie goal all week. My sodium is low and it's not TOM. I'm drinking a ton of water and burning about 600 cals a day in exercise. I'm ready to throw in the towel and just accept that I can't lose weight. Any advice would be great. I've also given up alcohol for the week to see if that would help but it's not helping!

What do you mean the starvation mode is no longer? Are you eating back your exercise calories?

How long have you been trying?
  • If you are too stressed or not getting enough sleep that will keep you from losing too.

If you have not eaten enough of weeks then increase you caloric intake you will put on weight as your metabolism would have slowed down, it may take weeks to get it revved up again. Keep eating all of the calories MFP suggests and don't weigh yourself for 3-4 weeks.
  • DONT GIVE UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Regardless of anything, you working out makes you a healthier person. Make your diary visible so others can see what you might be eating. I say nice job on the calorie burn. When you plateau just swtich up your work out and shock your body. The weight will come off again I promise.

Starvation Mode is real. It's our bodies response to 'famine'. If we keep our calorie intake too low for too long then your metabolism will adjust and slow down. The body will stop burning fat and hold onto it because it thinks it needs to. And it will start "eating" into your lean muscle mass.

1200 is a general baseline number. Stay above that, eat your exercise calories and be patient. Your weight might go up a bit as your metabolism re-adjusts but you will start losing.

And stick with veggies, fruit, low-fat dairy, whole grains and lean proteins. Lots of veggies!

  • Keep it up. Remember, it's healthy to work out.. Do it for your heart, for your body.. The rest will come.. But don't give up.

don't listen to everything you hear. "Starvation mode is no longer" ... says who?

If I believed everything i've heard, I would believe tupac is still alive, Elvis is too, Hugh Heffner doesn't need Viagara, and Jillian Michaels is dating Bob Harper despite the fact that they are both gay.

Peope throw random statements out there ALL THE TIME. Don't listen to everything.

I assuming you're referring to that thread about a study done a quarter of a century ago on 6 men over three days which PROVED THAT METABOLISM SLOWS DOWN AFTER EATING TOO LITTLE. I knew that stupid thread title would cause problems.

If you don't feed your body, it won't work properly. Your metabolism is likely as slow as a snail and you've got to convince it that if it burns fat & calories, it's ok. You do that by providing ample good quality food over an extended period of time. It's like coaxing an animal out of the corner -- be calm and gentle to get it to do what you want. Strict and severe will only make it scurry further back.

Thanks. I like the way you put that. :) And yes, that's the study I was referring to. It's here if anyone wants to see it...

That article got 'starvation mode' and 'starvation diet' confused. They are not the same. Of course if you force the body to eat 500 calories a day then yes eventually it will have to start dipping into fat stores...and organs will start shutting down and body systems will stop working as the body does everything it can to adjust to that low calorie intake.

I wouldn't spend too much time worrying if "starvation mode" is real or not real. Frankly, I'm just sick of the subject all together, there is science on both sides of the situation and we all have our own beliefs on the matter. You just need to figure out what works for you and do it. I would just suggest you don't put your calories too low because weather or not starvation mode is real, not eating enough food can cause other complications. Either way, you don't need the starvation mode excuse to not "throw in the towel" do you? You're stronger then that! <3

First of all, how long have you been at this? What are your current stats, the amount of calories you have been taking in and your workout routine? Second, have you seen a professional about this? Some people do have medical issues that make it harder for them to lose weight.

Don't give up sweetie, you can do it!

I just came off a fluctuation period. I experimented with focusing a lot more on strength training/muscle gain, therefore I increased my intake as the days went by, and I actually did less, but more intense, cardio. I've lost about 4 lbs this week...specifically, in the past 4 days. It just started falling down.

Bottom line: Be patient and give it time. Just stick to your own plan of weight loss. It will all come together in the end.

@123456654321 - I love the new gifs. Haha. You hit your goal weight didn't you? Congratulations.

haha Thanks, thought I'd spice it up a little! Hmmmmm Actually, I wonder what I have my goal weight currently set as? I actually hit it a while ago. I'm no longer trying to lose weight...I'd actually like to gain some muscle now. I've been slacking with the workouts lately though >.<

    Lisa,

You must have not read the whole thread. The scientific evidence to support the hypothesis that caloric restriction slows down your metabolism and hurts weight loss was overwhelmingly larger than the article posted in the OP, which as somebody else said was on 6 men over a 3 day period of eating nothing where their metabolism did slow down.
