So what are some good whole food to eat before and after a work out. I've gathered protein is good for after, but what about before?
Also any recommendations of the kind of protein. I don't want to eat protein bars or shakes, only whole foods please. Same for the before, no bars or artificial drinks. Please and thanks.

I find a banana or apple can work as a good before snack or a handful of raw almonds. After, assuming a good mix of cardio and strength training while you were at the gym, I enjoy a boiled egg and cup of oatmeal with an orange or cantalope.

Milk is a great source of protein for before or after workouts. It has whey, for quick absorbtion into your bloodstream, as well as casein, which takes longer to digest and gives your body a steady stream of protein for hours afterward. As well, it supplies you with carbs for energy (especially chocolate milk) and other nutrients like calcium and vitamin D. It's easy to prepare and consume, especially if you're in a hurry.

The perfect excuse to add chocolate milk to my diet.
