What does it take to tone up?

I'm pretty much at a healthy weight and I eat well but I'm just not sure how often I need to work out either cardio or strength to really tone up but not bulk up. Just get more lean mass. I also am wondering how many weeks it might take from previous experience. I do cardio about 3-4 times a week to maintain my fitness. It's just the strength training I am kind of sporadic about.

Thanks!! :)

You won't "bulk" - you don't have the right hormones to "bulk".

If you ever see a woman with A LOT of muscle, she will have been working HARD to develop this over a long time. Some are genetically gifted like that, other's are on the juice.

Tiny weights will make little difference to develop visible tone IMHO. I lift relatively hard, like 6-8 rep sets, 10 as a max. I only use very few machines and usualy use free weights.

Rachel Cosgrove's "New Rules of Lifting for Women" is a good read.

I am in that toning up phase as well and I am kicking up my strength training a notch. I am working through another one of Rachel Cosgrove's books called "The Female Body Breakthrough' and it has really been helping me with posture as well which is so important. As the above poster said, it is pretty impossible to bulk up given the fact that we don't have the testosterone levels that men do.
  • Thanks :D How often do you guys do strength training?

It makes up about 50% of my training. Usually around 4 sessions a week.
