Calories on pedometer?

I want a HRM but I really can't afford one right now. I was looking at WM tonight and some other things. I noticed on some of the pedometers they have 'calories burned'. Are these just the calories burned from the steps you take? Thanks for your help!! :)

    I just got a HRM with some tax return money, it wasn't too expensive ($35), It has a pedometer included in it. After I input my age, sex, weight, resting heart rate, & stride it tracked my steps taken, how long I was walking, & then how many calories I burned while walking. Hope that helps!
