Hi All

I am new to this site and have joined up because I am realy struggling to lose weight. I exercise daily and usually eat between 700-1000 cals a day. On the weekend I tend to binge a bit but I thought because of all the hard week I do in the week its ok to indulge a bit on the weekend. However, I am not losing any weight and I wonder if its because of this undereating/overeating struggle I go through.

My goal at the moment is to eat 1000 cals a day at which rate I should lose about 2lbs a week,

Any advise?

Replies

  • I am having 1200 calories a day as I believe this is what you need to lose weight at a rate of 1-2lbs pw. Do you drink a lot of water? Do you weigh everything which includes vegetables and fruit?

I think your body becomes accustomed to the routine. If you undereat, your body goes into starvation mode, and will then hoard the calories you consume on the weekends. Trust me, space out your meals and eat what you are supposed to.
  • you probably shouldnt eat less than 1000 calories a day, it's unsafe. as well, it is better to eat the similar amount of calories everyday as this trains your metabolism to work a certain way. when you indulge on the weekend and eat probably twice your amount of calories, you are being very hard on your body and your metabolsim cannot keep up with it. drink lots of water and eat tons of fibre. remember that the weight is not so much what is important as is the ratio between your waist and hip measurements... the inches lost show your effort more than the pounds dropped as you can still weigh the same but be smaller with mroe muscle mass.

From everything I've ever heard about healthy eating you need at least 1200 calories per day to keep your metabolism up so that you can lose weight! Undereating is bad for you... make sure you eat enough, lots of fruits and veggies and drink lots of water. Also exercise 3-4 days a week (or more, whatever is right for you). Good luck!

    PLEASE read this post: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/3047-700-calories-a-day-and-not-losing
Sounds like it fits you to a "T".
  • Undereating doesn't prepare longterm results, its short term and can sometimes backfire!

The weekends are your downfall. You should allow yourself one cheat meal per week. That's one meal, not one day or especially not one weekend. You should eat 5 small meals per day to jump start your metabolism. If your body expects to be fed every 3-4 hours it will be more likely to burn fat and not store it

You need to eat more. Your body needs a certain amount of calories and nutrition in order to function properly. If you get less than you need your body will stop burning fat and will store it instead. Increase your daily calorie goal and eat your exercise calories.

i think your not counting your cals right or your not getting your hart rate up enough that your body is going to burn the cals  food for thought its better to eat the max amount of cals 1200 is the best to eat with exercise to keep your body working right and will get you at your weight goal any thing lower your setting your self up to be fat later
p.s if your were execisesing hard and eating that littel you would be skin and bones your body dose not hold on to what it needs as fuel thats why anorexia are so skinny

It's up to you to decide, but do take note that eating a significantly lower amount of calories daily will play a factor in hindering energy levels, weight loss, and proper brain and body function. If you exercise more, you should be eating a bit more for fuel. You may feel "fine" but just short of starving yourself, you may begin to notice more fatigue and mood swings and changes. Once that starts happening, it's because your body is no longer working properly. The body will find ways of finding energy stores, and ultimately, if it needs the fat from your brain to survive, it will take it. And no one wants to willingly become a vegetable. They should be eating them.

So, do what you will as it is your own body, but the healthier recommendation anyone could tell you would be to eat more. And the links regarding eating calories and creating healthy calorie deficits have already been posted, so use those as informational resources and make an informed decision as to what you want to do.

    I smell trollbait...
  • You know, it is the splurging you're doing that keeps you even... that being said, I think your calorie restriction is wise. I've decided to fast two days a week and eat about 1300 cals on the other days--- trouble is, I do what you do and stay even. I love calorie restriction and fasting, it helps express human growth hormone, which in turn brings increased health and vitality. So, any day you can restrict your calories is a good day, a day without calories is a great day. Fasting three days at time is about the max, unless you're trying to cure your self of cancer, or some other profound physiological event. What you and I need to do is stop rewarding ourselves for austerity during the week. My biggest problem is alcohol, I need to limit my indulgence to once every two weeks and I think I'll start to see results agin. there are some great books on CR (calorie resriction) diets---- it's about health, not wieght loss, but if you burn more than you put in you WILL loose weight. So many will say you're changing your metabolism-- that theory has recently been debunked. Of course, it takes about 10 years to finally settle the nay sayers--- so you will hear this for the rest of your life--- rest assured your metabolism will not shut down unless you are sedentary.

this is a valid theory of health and weight loss--- not trying to stir up trouble. Look it up--- number of books on CR for life extension... How would you extend your life if minimal calories were a bad thing? Ever look at CR enthusists?--- they are thin. thin is healthy, CR is healthy, fasting is healthy. There is a tendancy for all of us to follow experts, things incorperated into the tapestry of life. It is important to challenge all "firmly held" truths---- My challenge--- look up fasting and CR diets

    what does "troll bait" mean?

A "troll" is someone who goes on an internet forum and stirs up trouble. Usually they make a post or two about some controversial subject like, oh, say, Starvation Mode on a fitness forum. Since this is the original poster's first post...some might think that is the case here.

    thanks everyone

What I didnt mention is that I am on the pill and I also drink A LOT of diet coke-but because it has zero cals I thought it wouldnt put on weight

But lately I have been thinking it must be this as its the only thing I have an excess of-I have a personal trainer who agrees 700 cals is too little but 1000 is perfect as long as its good foods and not 'crap' calories

TBH my exercising is high intesity 1 hr spin classes and I never really feel tired

The smallest I have ever been is a size 8 (US size 4) and that was when I ate no junk food or carbs such as bread and potatoes-i still ate fruit

Is there any evidence to suggest diet coke could be the baddy
  • i think it is very important to eat the exact calorie amount I have been under eating and have not lost any weight so thiws week i am aiming for my total every day and see what happens.

Well defined. Thank you for clarifying as I was about to explain. I only say that because TC has a ticker goal of 14 lbs to lose and recently just joined. I'm familiar with trolling as I am one on other forums as well, so I thought it was an intentional bait for a flame war. Though, I don't troll on actual community help sites such as this, but the option may be open season to others seeing as how it's so easy to incite responses and excited emotions based on actual life concerns, i.e. undereating to lose weight.

Since Diet Coke is not only bad for you but for the environment, why don't you wean yourself off and see if it affects you?

Diet coke wil make you crave real sugar so it could be causing the binges. It has also been known to cause people to hold on to fat. It is aslo terrible for you.

You may experience headaches if you try to quit cold turkey (all at once). That will most likely be from the caffeine withdrawal if you've been drinking a lot of Diet Regular Coke.

If you get headaches, try adding in some tea (with caffeine - regular unsweetened Lipton would work.) It is good to get off the artificial sweetener, as well.

    ....I'll bite.

Diet Coke still has sodium in it, along with all the other chemically altered sugar substitutes, which btw aren't really good for you over a long period of time, so since you say you drink A LOT of it, A LOT of sodium has the potential for retaining water and weight gain or weight stalling could be caused by the water weight. Drinking more water will actually flush out your system and any excess fluid retention in the body, and you literally piss out that excess, leaving your body refreshed and ready to sweat cleaner.

Open up your diet to a variety of vegetables and lean protein if you're concerned about carbs, though low-carb or no carb diets are just that...they're diets = temporarily short term weight loss plans. If you like bouncing back and forth between losing and gaining weight, then by all means keep restricting your body from energy sources such as carbohydrates. No one's going to stop you.

If you decide to introduce carbs into your diet, make them complex carbs such as whole wheat and anything with plenty of fiber in order to maintain sugar levels so that they don't spike and crash, which will cause you to eat "crap" foods, as your trainer so eloquently put it. Honestly, you just have to make the obviously healthier choices between foods you normally eat if you want long term results. A literal change in your lifestyle needs to be made. Weekend binges are a great solution for an ex-party girl to fail at being the "ex" party girl. You can't binge and be skinny in a healthy way.

You may actually be under eating and have put your body into starvation mode. Try for 1200 cal per day (eat small meals every 4 hours with a big glass of water) and don't forget that for every calorie you burn, you earn that back as caloric intake. Your body needs the fuel to keep your metabolism in the fat burning mode. And yes, lots of water to flush out the toxins.

Are u really eating that number of cal? Could u be under recording?

Yesterday I bought a 170g jar of almond butter. I pit some on my rice cakes today and yesterday and also had a couple of spoonfuls. I put a guess of 100 cal each day. At the end of today ( it is nearly bed time in the uk!) I notice half the jar is gone , at 600cal per 100g that is way more than my estimate
