30 Day Shred Making You Gain Weight?

So I'm almost halfway through the 30 Day shred program and I've gained back a little bit of weight! Does anyone else on the 30 Day Shred currently or in the past have this problem ? If so, is it too early to start losing weight? I would really like to know because right now the prospects of reaching my weight goal seems almost impossible. I'm feeling like the DVD is making it more difficult to loose:frown:

Today is day 20 for me on 30DS, but I haven't weighed myself since starting. I'm very intereted in seeing the responses.0

I have not gained weight, but I am not losing anymore either. Of course 30 DS is going to help you add muscle, which weighs more than fat, so technically you could gain weight instead of losing. My problem is, I am not losing any inches either. I think my problem is my calorie count though (too low). You just have to find your right balance.0

The first time that I did the Shred I stayed at the exact same weight for the entire 30 days...but I gained quite a bit of muscle & lost several inches around my body. Now, I am currently on day 21 in a row of the shred & have lost 3lbs & several inches again. I think it just depends on where you're at in your journey along with how your body responds to the strength training. Take your measurements if you haven't already, because I'm sure that even if you're not losing lbs, you're losing inches! Stick with it, girl :happy:0

I've lost 11 pounds in the last 45 days while doing the 30 day shred and now some other Jillian Michael's dvds along with counting calories and eating healthy. You have to have the combination in order to lose. It would be interesting to see your food diary to see if there is anything there that might be inhibiting weight loss. The 30 day shred alone will not produce weight loss.0

Technically, muscle does not weigh more than fat. A pound of muscle weighs the same as a pound of fat. However, muscle takes up less space than fat and burns more calories on a daily basis than fat. 30 Day Shred doesn't do much for my weight but I can see definition coming through.0

I think it depends on what else you are doing alongside the shred. I am on day 22 today.
Lost 14 lbs so far but that was with 1200 cals plus at least an extra 30/40 mins DVD or dance on top of shred.
Been maintaining 98 lbs for just over a week and have stayed exactly the same.

LOL! I'm not a stupid person but I have never thought of that before. DUH! Of course a pound of fat weighs the same as a pound of fat! Sheesh! I dropped 5 lbs right away, but now I'm holding steady... no weight loss for two weeks. I'm on level three. I haven't taken my measurements, but I know my pants fit differently so that's got to count for something. I feel my arms getting tighter too.
It's hard and can be frustrating when the scale doesn't go down (or goes in the opposite direction), but as long as you're giving it your all and watching what you eat I'm convinced it will catch up with us eventually....

I agree with doing some other type of cardio with it. Having said that though, when I first started doing the shred, I couldn't imagine wanting to add anything to it, but now that I'm used to it, I like to do Jillian's 6 week 6 pack or Zumba for the wii or Just Dance for the wii. The games are fun, because it doesn't feel like you're working out, except for the fact that you're sweating a lot LOL. I've been doing the shred also and since day 1 I've lost about 5 lbs, but I'm also about 15 lbs away from my goal.0

You're so right, It's really all about finding that my right balance which is unique to my body, metabolism and so on. No wonder most people call this a lifestyle change as oppose to a diet. Once you find the right balance that fits you and adjust to it. losing and maintaining weight would come a lot easier:)0 -

More people need to know this...that is the most annoying myth ....it is like popped popcorn and not popped popcorn yes...but a pound is a pound!
Anyway...I am doing the 30 day shred and am not losing any weight but and definately getting stronger and have lost inches :flowerforyou: ...well everywhere but my belly....so now I am looking at my sodium intake very closely!!0 -
Thanks everyone for the advice!! Overall what I'm hearing is that I should take my measurements to see if I'm at least loosing inches, add other things to the workout like cardio, and pay closer attention to what I eat. I'm going to try to implement these changes. As far as my diet goes, there is some work to be done since I frequently go over my carbs (from air popcorn) and sugar. I always make up for my extra calories above 1,200 with exercise but maybe I should try not to go too much overboard as I often do even though I burn it off with exercise.
My goal now then is:
To not eat too much above 1,200 even with exercise
To limit my sugar intake
To buy a measuring tape to measure myself
and
To find the right balance of cardio and strength exercise, carbohydrates, fat, and protein to works well for my body and the types of exercises I do.

If you're not taking your measurements, then you don't know what's going on. And neither do we. Measurements are more important than weight.
When people say that "muscle weighs more than fat" they are referring to the same volume, not the weight. Fat takes up much more space than muscle, so at the same size, the muscle DOES weigh more than the same volume of fat. You can Google image "pound of muscle, pound of fat" if you still don't understand.0 -
I would also take pictures to document. My side by side comparisons are awesome even though not much weight loss with 30 day shred. For the record, according to my bodymedia (bodybugg) I only burn 130 calories doing level 2 of shred and 147 calories doing level 3. So although I literally drip sweat onto my mat while in the awful plank exercises, the calorie burn for the 20 minutes is not that great so you don't have to worry about eating many exercise calories unless you add some cardio with the shred.0

You just need to find your balance and remember not to solely rely on the scale. If you feel stronger, and your clothes fit better, then you are on the right track!0
