running advice

Options
hiya

looking for some advice - i used to run quite a lot - (3-4 x weekly) but one day i got this burning pain in both my calfs - deffo no injury.

i have been to the dr who thinks it could be an old sporting injury from when i was younger and did a lot of sports - im not so sure.

i have changed my trainers and also stretching before and after running but this pain is so unpredictable.

any advice on how to resolve the pain would be appreciated
x

Have you been fitted for the proper running shoe?

Get a second opinion from another doctor. No one on here is going to be able to diagnose you over the computer. Good luck!!

A burning sensation in both calves??

Hmmm... Sorry absolutely no idea. I would be inclined to make an appointment with a sports physio.

I told my doctor once that I was training for a half marathon. He looked at me with a vacant look in his eyes (as though to say "why would anyone want to do that?"), and said "that's a long way". I know that he is not going to be any help with a sports related injury. There are plenty of doctors out there that don't exercise and therefore don't know anything about sports related injuries. I second the motion to see a sports medicine doctor.

Is the pain in the front or back of the calf? You definitely want to be fitted to find the correct running shoe. Are you stretching after running?

Have your electrolyte's checked as well. Make sure your potassium level is ok. Also go see a specialist in sports medicine.

oh, wow that made me laugh! Some doctors, I tell ya...:grumble:

I'm no expert, but maybe it's because you launched straight into it after taking a break? When I started running again, I HURT. But I worked up gradually and now it's all good. I also got some awesome adidas running shoes too.

Get properly fitted for running shoes. I did that recently and it was such a good experience. I actually had to run in the store to find the best shoe for me. The guy helping me told me what to look for and how to know what shoe fits. It's made a difference for me.

    Could well be your achilles?

Have a read here and see if your symptoms sound similar?

Either way I think you should see a physio.
