Hi All,

I am planning on going vegetarian/pescatarian in a few weeks for personal and health reasons.

I am planning on doing it temporarily and then converting back to a diet including some meat (there are some dishes I like too much to be a strict vegetarian!). I will start March 8 and end April 24th (the Lenten season for Catholics).

Does anyone want to do this with me? I am very excited and thought we could support one another, post good tips and recipes, etc.

Friend me if you do!

Bump 2...Not a meat eater really....
  • A pescatarian is someone who consumes fish/shellfish.

A pescatarian eats no meats but DOES eat fish and seafood. Techinically I will not be going full "vegetarian" since I will eat fish and won't be going vegan since I plan on eating eggs and cheese.

Here's a break down of different types: http://vegetarian.about.com/od/vegetarianvegan101/tp/TypesofVeg.htm

I'm not picky about it (though I now it bugs a lot of vegetarians) but I think any diet seeking to limit meat is a good thing. Semi-vegetarians and flexitarians welcome!

I'm doing it! Hubby and I have been talking about it for a while. Yesterday was my last burger, (although I didn't think about it at the time!) and I felt gross after eating it.

I may eat chicken here or there, because if I'm on the go fish isn't always an option. However, red meat is out. It's sad, I truly love beef, but I feel really horrible every time I eat it and I can't even remember the last time I ate pork.

So, from here on out I'm a mostly vegetarian- sometime pescetarian.
  • Actually, I am considering this as well. I have been reading so much about the crap that makes it into our meat that I don't know how I can possibly eat another bite, yet at the same time it is so engrained into my lifestyle that I have no idea how I will pull it off - especially since I cook for others that love meat.

I could go for being a bacontarian. I could give it all up except for bacon. We're trying to do more meatless meals so I'd love to read about what people are doing here.

One of my best friends is a "bacontarian" too! I have to admit I LOVE bacon but figure I can give it up for 40 days. It will be one of the meats I likely eat again afterwards!

good for you! You'll be surprised how much protein, calcium, and iron you can get from nuts, lentils, kale, etc. For some people it isn't practical to go vegetarian or vegan (I never really liked meat that much so I don't feel like I can judge others).

Even being a half time vegetarian would be amazing! There are so many reasons to do this (environmental reasons, food scarcity reasons, health reasons) so I'm glad to hear there are a couple people willing to cut back a little on their meat :)

Yes I am what I like to call a semi-vegitarian. I don't eat much red meat except once in awhile when the household is craving it and then it has to be organic grass fed and free-range! Lol we do eat chicken more often than the red meat and ALOT of fish. I would love to support you and cut back more on my animal proteins :) I have some filling vegetarian dishes I could share...

I'm up for this. I've been working towards it the last few weeks anyway - trying to reduce the amount of meat I consume for world sufficiency reasons (inspired by the More with Less cookbook).

I don't wish to be a full-time vegetarian but would restrict myself to meat once or twice a week, I don't really eat cheese and that often seems to be the fallback position for many people.

I have a number of vegie cookbooks so it would force me to actually USE them!!!

Friend me and lets give this a go!!!

    Hello peeps,

How are we doing so far on this? I confess, the first day being Wednesday I had a 4am-10pm trek to Dublin and back that began with a simply horrid bacon and egg bap at the airport. Not the best start......

I'm finding it tricky to think of easy to cook veggie ideas, especially as I rarely eat much cheese. I have cooked up and frozen various beans/chick peas etc. but am stuck for ideas how to use them as protein bases for meals. I have also got into dhal a lot - easy to cook as long as I don't walk away and let it burn on the base of the pan.....

    any ideas?

I know this is off topic, and I really need to update my profile, but I tried going raw vegan for a while,it works better for me in the summer,as I find it difficult during the cold seasons, but as for the way I eat now,I'm very selective,I could classified as a pescatarian but I'm selective as in I won't consume whole dairy(milk, cheese, butter) but will eat foods with it mixed in(cakes,sauces..sometimes etc),eggs I find hard to completely leave out,but I have not eaten red meat/chicken for about a year now and have coped fine. :D

Good to see you're liking it! I'm only a week in but so far haven't found it all that challenging, there's plenty of yummy options without meat.

well apart from my complete failure the first day (airports don't really do meat-free too well) I've done veggie all week apart from Saturday - and that was because a mad friend cooked up a storm that was so yummy (oxtail, roasted chicken, pasta, beans, paella spanish tortilla..........).

It has been a little bit of a challenge but a fun one - I'm having to think hard about what to cook, and have pre-cooked a load of beans in the freezer for easy throwing together of meals. Screwed up on some tofu (stir-frying with silken tofu doesn't really work) but it's not been too tough so far.

Good for you! I'm sure traveling will be hard and that meal sounds too awesome to miss (hence why I won't be vegetarian permanently!) .

Lately, I've also rediscovered the veggie pizza...YUM.

    Individual pizza crust
    tomato sauce
    spinach
    bell peppers
    mushrooms
    chopped zucchini
    sun dried tomatoes
    cheese

    YUM. And filling!

I actually gave up met for Lent - because I wondered what it would be like. I can tell you I love it. I still do eggs ( protin) and some cheese. I never really was a meat eater to begin with and I really do feel better. My body feels better. I have been doing a lot of research on it. I have two books ( I am at work- so I will have to get them later) They have tons of ideas about food and the pros and cons of being vegitarian or vegan. I am glad that I am not the only one here :-)

Week 2 (or so) check in?

What has everyone been eating, any good recipes to share?
What foods have been most challenging?
Have you noticed any differences? (Weight, how you feel after eating, cravings, etc.)

I really do feel much better though, I have lost another 2 lbs, since I started which was nice bc I was at a serious platue. I don't really have cravings for me meat. I am not nearly as tired as I was when i was downing tons of meat based protins at meals. I have not really replaced that so to speak with anything. I am still just doing my two protin shakes a day before and after workouts. I love it. I have rediscovered how great all kinds of fruits and veggies are.

    How's it going?

What's your weight loss been since you started? (if any)
What's your energy level been like?

    Are people noticing changes!?

I don't know if it has affected my weightloss at all because I am losing so incredibly slowly that it is hard to measure. My energy levels are pretty good though, excpet this week when I have been sick and have upped calories temporarily.

The thing I have notcied most though, is that since challenging myself NOT to eat meat, I am finding it hard to eat meat. I am eating far less meat without even trying. I am also struggling to contemplate a meal based around meat. I have eaten a lot more fish, beans and lentils. One of my new staple quick meals is lentil dhal.

I'm not on a 'meat-free' diet or even on a 'once-a-week' meat diet. But certainly there is less meat going in, without that being replaced by the ubiquitous cheese or even fake meat products that so often replace meat. I can't eat much cheese so the small amounts I do tend to be strong flavours.

I can't see myself changing my 'diet' back after this either. I've become a bit of a 'meat-on-special-occasions' person which will save money if nothing else!!!
