Injuries

Ok, I'm going to vent a little so please forgive me...
I'm starting to notice more and more threads saying, "This hurts. What's wrong with me?" or "I did this. How do I fix it?"
If you get hurt exercising or if you have an ache or pain that won't go away (your spouse does NOT count), GO SEE A DOCTOR!!!! I am not a doctor nor do I play one on TV nor did I stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night. I can't diagnose you over the internet and - most likely - neither can a real doctor.
This isn't to say that we can't help each other through the little bumps and bruises we get, but if it is something that lasts for an extended period of time or is sever pain, PLEASE go get it looked at by a professional (or two if necessary). It is essential for your own health, safety and well-being!!

Ahahaha genius. Pure genius.0 -
I myself suffer from pain associated with working out. I have visited the DR a few times over the year, and I just keep hearing the same thing. I'm sure others are in the same boat, and wouldn't mind a little advice from someone else who is or has gone through it.0

I'm not talking about little bumps and bruises or being sore from a workout. I'm talking about potentially serious injuries that need to be looked at by someone, not "evaluated" over the internet.0 -
Unfortunately, injuries are not the only advice being given. I see so many inaccurate things being written in these forums. I just hope that most people have the sense enough to ask a Doctor, and regardless of what other people have experienced, nothing replaces a Doctor. For example, I'm recovering from a stress fracture and recovery time for fractures are different depending on how bad the fracture is. If you search the term "fracture" in the forum, some of the advice is ridiculous. I know that no one on this site can diagnose me or recommend treatment without first seeing my x-ray, second hearing my symptoms and when they started, and third seeing me walk, etc. So I understand your frustration, but I hope that people don't seriously follow the advice given on here all the time. I like to read what others have to say but I never put their advice over my own common sense or over my Doctor's recommendation.0

im with ya.
If you are obese, you should get a physical with your Doctor before starting a major workout plan. If you start working out hard core and hurt yourself you could prolong you being able to lose the weight.
I myself have a pinched sciatic nerve that goes from my lower lumber all the way down to my right foot.. I saw dr's for 6 months about it getting shots in my back.. but I also know what my body can and cant do. If it hurts I find another exercise.
I too see ppl who I think are pushing themselves in major pain. UGH HELLO...
SEE A DR.. thats what they are there for...0 -
I'll play devils advocate.... I turn to my peers for information before going to the Dr. As I'm sure many of us do. There are so many reasons, IMO, not to visit a dr. The main one - some people just can't afford it, with the insurance crisis in America right now, not everyone has such benefits. Then, if they go, pay the costs, the Dr may want more expensive tests such as MRI and XRays, which again, they can't afford. Seeking advice or suggestions from others having experienced the same things may really help. It may be the deciding factor of - am I over reacting, will rest help, vs my leg is broken. I would hope, that anyone seeking assistance from a public forum, would know when it is best for them to seek medical attention.
I'm also of the think outside the box perspective. I am pretty anti medical care - some bad experiences (IE Husband broke his hand and was told by the ER they were busy, if he called back in 8 hours, they may be able to see him, or he could go to his regular dr the next day, just one example).
I personally don't believe that anyone would be posting here instead of seeking medical attention, but more so, seeking assistance from peers as to what direction to take. Common sense should always rule.0 -

I'm still suffering from stress fractures in my shin.. Left leg healed right leg has not.. I tell everyone feeling shin splints that don't go away with RICE to see dr.. I didn't go soon enough and I've been out of comission for 5 months from running & high impacts, I still have issues with weight bearing.. I had a lot of MFP people tell me to suck it up and get running that stretching before would help. I couldn't even walk.
Follow your gut and see dr if you get hurt. Pain is not normal. Soreness is normal.0 -

Oh no, I'm so sorry. I have been out for almost 6 weeks and was finally able to do some light running today. I was told to change my shoes and I should be fine (from people). My doctor did say that the shoes I was using (barefeet shoes) were partly to blame, but only because I was doing too much training in them. I was also told about RICE and that helps but I needed a boot and that is why I'm healing. So I agree with you to follow your gut and I love to hear what people on MFP have to say, but sometimes the info is not accurate.0 -
I wore boot for 6 weeks.. Chasing 2 yr old twins all day has hindered my recovery.. Good luck with your healing.. My leg leg healed quickly but not my right, I had 3 stress fracture in it.0
