Hi, Just looking for some good ideas of how to exercise with my toddler inddoors (we live in Northern Minnesota). I thought dancing would be great fun for both of us, but he walked away after only a couple minutes. He likes running around the house and when I push him in a box, but there is only so much of that that I want to do! Any ideas?

  • I pick my daughter up and use her like weights lol. Playing airplanes with them lying across your feet while you lift your legs up and down, holding him with your hands while you raise your arms up and down...

Hmm, I don't know how much regimented exercise you can do with a toddler. I have two; they get distracted pretty easily. They do like to watch while I work out though.

How old are we talking? My 3-year-old likes to do the Wii Fit Plus exercises with me -- he's not great at it, of course, but he likes to do it, and when we complete each exercise I give him a high-five and tell him thanks for helping me.

If you're talking younger than that, there are some DVDs available for working out with your baby. I haven't tried them, but a Google or Amazon search will find you loads of results. Or, you could just set him up with some toys and work out alone if you want to do something more intense.

I put Thomas and friends on in the living room, and then go into the bedroom and do a Jillian michael's DVD, lol

I have a two year old. I also dance with her but I make sure to leave the TV on (but muted) to a show she likes such as Yo Gabba Gabba. She doesn't realize the music is comming from the stereo and not the TV so she's down with it. Some days we make it through 4 or 5 songs, some days less. Every little bit counts!

Chase him at his level. If you swat down and chase him you are going to feel a burn in like 4 steps into it. He will laugh and run away because you are going to look funny. Make sounds like a frog and he will crack up. You will start laughing and between laughing and chasing him around like that you will have a nice work out.

We "walk like animals" so we jump around like frogs (explosive plyo movements), inch along like inch worms (bend in a v, walk with your hands out, then walk your legs back so you're in a V again), walk like horses (alternating arm/legs takes more thought than you'd really think. Most people move right leg and right arm at the same time), and others that she thinks of. We also dance together, mainly I hold her and twirl around. I was thinking about getting a child's yoga dvd or something like that. We have Dance Central on the Kinect and Zumba, she loves to watch, and kinda moves off to the side. Maybe she'll jump in soon.

If you have room, maybe you could teach your kiddo to jump rope, or hula hoop. Red light/Green light. Simon Says, things like that.

I use TurboFire and there is an option to make the music louder-I do that and my little boy just stares at the tv like what in the world are those people doing-sometimes he dances and tries to do some of the moves. It just seems like the louder you make the tv, the more they are into it and dont get so cranky while all the focus isnt on them :)

I wait until my Son is ready for a nap. While he's napping I do 30 Day Shred. It's prefect.

They have a Yoga DVD for kids. My girls love it. Its "real" yoga moves but they make it silly so the kids pay attention. I think it's called YogaKids. We got it at Barnes and Nobles.

Have you heard of the Wiggles? My kids have one of their dvds. I put it in and try to keep up with them with an aerobic side step in-between. My younger kids watch it or join in. I have a heart rate monitor and I burn more doing that than any other exercise I have tried. I use the high impact aerobics to track it because it is closest in calorie burn count. Of course my 14 year old looks at me like I am crazy but hey I'm losing weight! My youngest is 5 but I also did it years ago when all I had was little ones.

Hope you find something that works for you!
