Suggestions needed please on how to get energy to move my body to workout at 5 am. when I wake-up. I don't get in the shower til 6 a.m. I wake up my son and get him ready at 7. The bus picks them up at 7:20. I leave for work at 7:30 and work til 4:30. Thanks!

  • After about a week of getting up that early and working out you'll have the energy. You'll notice your day is so much better, at least mine is. Good luck, you can do it!

Pack all the stuff you need to work out and what you plan on wearing for the day the night before. I think it also helps to get a breakfast ready to go in the fridge too. The less thinking you have to do in the morning, the better. I also keep my alarm in the bathroom (away from my bed) so that I HAVE to get out of bed to turn it off. This is probably the #1 thing that has helped me get up at 4:30 for my morning work outs.

    Good luck!

That is my exact schedule. well pretty much anyways. and I have been slacking on working out at 5am. but its the only time I can work out. when my soon to be 3 yr old and 1 year old are still in bed sleeping before work.

Lets both commit to working out at 5am!!!

You have a pretty busy morning and although I don't have as much going on (i'm a full time student) I have also found that after a week of waking up early it just comes natural. I'm enrolled in a gym so my goal is always to make it to their 545 a.m class 3x a week. when i do mange to wake up and do my exercises for the day it feels great to already have that under my belt before my typical day starts.
I think the hardest part is literally getting up and out of bed but just think of how much easier it is to workout before starting ur day than after an entire work day =). I also find it helps if I listen to some "pump up" music in the a.m. gets me out of the sleepy state lol
    Hope you find the motivation

I'm in the same boat. I get up at 5am, do my workout, shower, get kids up and out the door and work till 5pm.

I started going to bed earlier. I try to get in bed by 9-9:30pm. Going to bed earlier makes it easier to get up.

One morning I woke up, sat on the side of my bed and thought to myself, Why don't you go back to bed, everyone else is still sleeping. Then I thought, that's exactly it. Nobody can make you get up, nobody can make you exercise, and nobody can control what you do with your weight loss goals but yourself. I decided I will get up and do this for myself, because I deserve some time everyday to better my life. Nobody can do it for me.
When I got up off the bed, my husband, whom I thought was sleeping, started humming the Rocky theme song. It made me laugh. He was supporting me in his own way. I get up everyday now and think, I'll feel much better when I get my workout done and I'll have more energy for the day too. You can do it!

We're on the same schedule! I've been setting my alarm for around 4:40 to give me time to get dressed and to the gym by 5. I tend to work best on guilt.... :) I know that even if I press snooze, I'll feel guilty if I just lay there and sleep...because really, the extra 45 min - 1 hour won't really make me feel better, especially compared to how good I feel after working out. It helps to have the clothes laid out to make it really easy to get ready and go. The extra incentive to be able to post some time on MFP also doesn't hurt. :)

I typically leave my house by 7:00 and don't get home until after 6. By the time I get home, I'm usually too tired to make myself go to the gym, plus evenings are playtime at our house.

You can do it! You'll feel so much better after doing it for a week or so.

  • I started getting up at 5 to workout at the beginning of January and it does get easier. One thing that a friend of mine does to make getting up and ready a little easier is to sleep in her workout clothes. That way she can just get out of bed and get her shoes on. I know you can do it!

    Are you getting enough sleep?

The first time I tried to become a morning exerciser, I was not getting enough sleep. After a few months of this nonsense I was falling asleep at my desk at work! I was so run down I started to think I must be pregnant. Luckily (for me at that time) I wasn't--I just wasn't getting enough sleep!

Even though it seems as though it should be obvious, getting up earlier means going to bed earlier. I somehow missed that basic point the first time around.

Also, one of the big pros to early morning exercise is that you're more likely to stick to it! Not much else comes up to wreck your plans at 5AM!:noway: But that also increases your need for sleep, as you are consistently getting that workout in!

What's worked best for me is having a strict bedtime and getting up about 30 minutes before I plan to work out. I have some coffee and a small carb snack pre-workout when I'm on the morning workout schedule.

I wish I had someone to hum the Rocky theme song. That's great! Although I do have a cat who as soon as she hears the alarm is purring as hard as she can in my face trying to get attention. Its very hard to get back to sleep when someone is headbutting you.

Now, I'm not a 5 am-er, but I've noticed if I get my workout in early in my day I tend to get more things done which makes me feel better about myself.

  • THANK YOU all So Much for the wonderful suggestions! Knowing me I'd have to SLEEP in my workout clothes LOL so you all eat something before you workout then? I like the sound of after doing it for a week it will become routine for me, gotta do this! :)
