What is the difference between whole wheat and whole grain? If there is a difference which kind of bread, whole wheat or whole grain, is healthier, i.e., less processed?

What are some of the best brands (specific flavors/kinds of bread) to buy? For example, Arnold's Flax and Fiber...

Thanks.

I have fallen in love with deli slims, or sandwich rounds. They are the mini-buns and they only have 100 calories a pair. I also like any of the breads that are full of nuts and seeds. If you prefer a smooth bread, there are many breads now made with whole grains ground very fine to make a soft bread. If they say 100% whole wheat or 100% whole grain, they are the most nutritious. Just "wheat" or "whole grain" only means it has some of that in it, but lots of white flour too, so skip those.

I don't think there's a difference - you have to look at the ingredients to know for sure. If it says enriched, then it's basically no better then white flour. If you're looking for a natural wheat breat try Eziekel bread. It's in the freezer section.

    Enjoy.

I personaly buy Warburton's wholemeal. It has quite small slices, so a full sandwich has much fewer calories than with a larger bread.

Can't help you with meal vs grain though.
  • I havent found a good one yet.. so stealing these ideas and seeing what my grocer carries, I have tried the LIGHT bread, its like 45 calories a slice, but hte carbs are killing me
  • Whole wheat is better than whole grain. A bread can have white flour in it with whole grains and be labaled "whole grain". For my calorie and nutrition needs I LOVE the Sara Lee Delightfull. It is high fiber and only 90 calories for 2 slices!! Granted, it is not heavy and yummy like a lot of other great breads, but it works for me. If you are looking for something really dense and hearty, try the Sara Lee heart healthy 100% whole wheat, it is really yummy too!
  • I have been making my own in a breadmaker for well over a year now. The recipe has morphed over time and has ground flax seed, oats, multi-grain cereal, whole wheat, some white flour, honey, coconut oil, etc. It is delicious, but I can only have ONE slice at a time. I also buy Sara Lee Sandwich Thins ( made in several varieties) at the damaged freight store for 50 cents a package as opposed to $2.50+ at the grocery store.

You just have to read labels.

Whole grain is better than whole wheat, especially better than "whole wheat flour" since that strips away the outer layer which has the bran and fiber and minerals and things in it. Whole wheat is better than white enriched though.

"Whole grain contains the entire seed of the grain including the bran, which constitutes the outer layers of the grain, the germ which usually sprouts into a new plant, and the endosperm, which is the inner part of the grain.

Whole wheat refers to the flour obtained when the wheat grain (including bran, germ and endosperm) is ground or mashed to make bread or roti. Whole wheat is different from unrefined white flour which only has the endosperm."

It's a little complicated to type out but you can read these:
