Hey, just after a bit of advice.

I'm going to the gym 4-5 times a week, and burning anywhere between 400-550 cals on cardio (rower, stepper, eliptical, bike, treadmill)

The thing that I'm not sure about is how long after working out I should eat something? At the moment I sometimes have a alpro soya milkshake straight after working out but I'm not sure if I should be. I also sometimes eat sushi straight after working out. (in first 20 mins after workout).

Also, They say you should have protein after working out, how much? There are 8 grams in my milkshake.

Any advice gratefully received. :) Thanks

After Cardio wait 1hr before eating so your body is still using your fat stores.
If Its a bodypump or weight session eat protein and carbs straight after within 20 mins if you can .

I've been told (and my personal trainer backed this up), that you need to eat within an hour, preferably within 45 minutes of your workout

Provided your workout is a sensible time (not more then 60mins, 75 absolute max), Catabolism will set in within around 30mins of finishing as your body searches for aminos to repair the muscle fibre damage. Protein requirements vary based on your body size, weight, composition, etc but generally 30-40g IMMEDIATELY post-workout, with a small source of simple carbs (jelly babies are good!) should do the trick. The sooner you get that in you, the quicker your body will start to repair

Hey... i'm a personal trainer and my advice would be to eat within 20 mins of working out if you can but maximum time left should be 1 hour. The general rule is eat Carbs to Fuel and protein to repair. Try not to eat carbs too late. Protein is better as it boosts your metabolism and keeps it burning away while you sleep. Dont get too caught up on grams... you'll get too obsessed. Measure your protein to about the palm of your hand. This is a good amount.

Thats great guys, so I need more protein! But to keep having it within 20 mins. Would you advise to have protein bars or shakes (like the ones in holland and barratt??) would that turn me into a muscle woman?? I don't want that!! LOL

I always eat within the hour because I'm hungry after a hard workout. I tend to listen to my body about when to eat.
