Wow - not that I honestly didn't already know, but I just took a refresher course on a really hard lesson:

PLAN YOUR RESTAURANT MEALS AHEAD OF TIME!!

My sister & I took my elderly mother to the doc and stopped for lunch at Champps. My mom can't eat much, so I split a chicken salad sandwich with her & had a bowl of chicken noodle soup. Also ate a couple of onion rings from my sister's meal. Granted, I would never order chicken salad myself but when your 84 year old mother with Alzheimer's wants chicken salad, you order chicken salad. I had myself convinced that it probably wasn't too bad - didn't seem to be loaded with mayo or anything. Now that I've done the math, I just ate 915 calories!! That's almost my entire day's allotment!! I never do that badly when I'm on my own, but I didn't plan it out & I especially didn't think when choosing to split with my mom. I definitely have to work out tonight just so I can have dinner!!

So in case anyone missed the memo, here is your reminder...choose a restaurant before you go, pull up the nutrition facts on line & figure out what you should eat before you get there. And don't share lunches letting someone else make the choice for you. I love my momma dearly but it just cost me my night off from a workout.

Lesson learned!

Don't beat yourself up too bad over this. Your mother probably enjoyed the lunch with her daughters and that should count for something. These days happen and all you can do is move on to tomorrow

I couldn't have said it better myself.

Also if you haven't had a high calorie day in a while you will be surprised what it does to your metabolism you might actually see more movement on the scale than you realize.
  • You could also "pay back" some of those calories by borrowing, say, 50 per day for through the weekend. In three days that's 150 calories. It doesn't hurt to go over every now and then. Just don't do it often.

not such a big deal. i give myself free meals sometimes for special occasions. if you really want to stay under your calories you can always go for a 45 min long evening walk before or after dinner. That should give you an extra 200 calories!

Ugh! Been there done that! Went to Perkins awhile ago for a meeting and had a grilled turkey sandwich with a salad. It ended up being over 1,000 calories - I was devistated! It is hard too when you think you are doing ok - and you find out you are not. I work with a lot of restaurants as a consultant and see some HORRORS in the kitchen as far as your waistline goes.......had a cook dunk a basket of sauteed onions and peppers for a fajita in the deep fryer to rewarm them.......I couldn't believe my eyes!!! The amount of butter, or grill oil cooks use on food is mind boggling!!!

I just say that unless I cook it myself, or my husband cooks it for me - I don't really know what I am getting.

Me ordering at a restaurant. *too funny*

I'll have the chicken fajitas please. No tortillas, No cheese, No sour cream or guacamole, EXTRA lettuce, tomatoes, fresh onions and salsa.

    Heeeeheeeee.

agreed! i've made what were thought to be "healthy/smart" menu selections just to find out i've eaten almost my entire caloric intake for the day! those evil, yummy salads are soooo deceiving!
